I didn't see a dedicated thread to these flame styles. You don't see them enough. You see more of the popular flame style like these fine examples..

Now, there's nothing wrong with that style flame, but let's be honest.. Whenever someone says "flame job" this is the kind that comes to mind right away. It might even be considered over-used, like red Corvettes or 350s in everything. So let's avoid that particular style and post up the chunky flames that graced some of the hot rods before the "new" style became so dominant.

My rendering of the paint style I'm leaning towards for my project..

Von Dutch believed that flame licks should never cross each other. Apparently you're considering the age when no one knew the rules of flames...seaweed style licks, crab claws and the like. It would "date" the car, but you could also start a trend, if you got creative with the colors inside the flames...I say go forward with it!

Roth's '56 Ford are my favourite style flames. I love that seaweed style, long and skinny

  7. Sorry to be a downer, but I just don't like that style at all. Maybe I am too young and grew up around the first two styles more. To each his own though, right?

    Rock on!

  20. Here's the style I have decided to go with. One of the coolest flame jobs that just screams late 50's to me.

Thats cool, and just think when the 80s come back for our rods all you have to do is change the colors to pastel pink and Blue. ;):D

It seems a lot of these look less like flames and more like the paint shredding off the car, which honestly seems faster than it caught on fire haha. I can dig the chunky flames when they actually look like flames though, your rendering is pretty spot on.

This is a great idea for a thread. And, even if it's too late, somebody should post an early photo of the R&C Dream Truck 'cause I think it had chunky flames at one point.

Love the chunky flames! I was gonna do them on my '32 but unfortunately I have to sell it so I guess maybe on different car down the road.
