anyone else check out the april 2016 Hot Rod issue? there are some interesting engines in the Engine Masters contest article. The vintage engine class has buildups of a Packard, Chrysler poly, Lincoln Y block , and 2 ford Y blocks. very interesting how much power they wrang out of those old prehistoric beasts.

Those old engines look great hopped up, but... they are just SO heavy. Gary

The Y blocks and the poly are impressive.

I just got mine in the mail and started reading it. They tell us it's a 363" Packard but Hot Rod's lame coverage still doesn't give us all the specs. Like the bore and stroke like PHR always did. I did find it interesting however that the adjustable rockers comes from Ford's 477/534 family of industrial truck engines.

img131.JPG The Packard had a 4.060 bore and a 3.5 stroke. I know this because it was my engine for some time. I ran it in my Bonneville Vega with Hilborn injection. The cam I ran was an Isky 505, reground to the same specs as HRM says the roller cam in it now has. Could be. I also understood they knife edged the crank. I Reamed the rods for ARP rod bolts for a Chrysler and since Arias screwed up the pin bores in the pistons I honed the rods and pistons to use .990 pins. I can see a new damper img71.JPG View attachment 3128081 View attachment 3128081 and deep pan as well as the dyno headers. Don't know what they may have done to the heads. I ground out a lot of iron. Since it was a 352 I installed 374 size valves. But bought stainless race valves and cut them to length and put in the keeper groves. So, it was mine once. But I don't know how much of my stuff is still there.

Great article! I wondered if that Packard engine belonged to Rich Fox.... And so it did.
