Last August at the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville they had about 11,000 cars, the one that tripped my trigger was a 57 Buick Special tudor post car. It was black and had all the original chrome and stainless it left the factory with, a burgundy leather interior, automatic, and a nailhead with three two barrels. Yours standard car is even better. If your interested in selling, I'd be glad to take it of your hands.

Buick used the accelerator petal start for many years. Not sure when it ended. As for the synchromesh 3 speed transmission, according to some of the Buick gurus on the Buick Club of America site (BuickClub.org) there are no existing records that indicate how many were produced. They say that it is under 10% of the total Special production. I personally believe it is likely much lower. The transmission is a very light weight transmission and was only behind the 250 HP Special motor. All other models of '57 Buicks had a 300 HP motor.

I have a pair of '57 2 DR HT Specials, one of which has the synchromesh transmission. I have attended several national Buick meets and have never seen another one. From that perspective I would say you have a some what rare car.

You should post this on the Buick Club site and see what feed back you get from those folks.

Recognized that color right away - Dawn Gray, like my dad's '57 Century. Looking at the door jamb I can see why my mother thought it was purple when it was delivered.
Fun fact - in Cuba they made pretty good road racers:

Out of all the tri-5 GM cars, I always liked the 57 Buick the best. They just look good from any angle. You did good getting that car.

Back in the early 60's when I had my 57 Special HT the local speedo shop wouldn't guarantee the speedo further than the end of their driveway. I bought a Sun tach and used that as my speedo. It would be worth it to find out if the repair place guarantees that it'll work for longer than that

The transmission is the same that was used in 56-57 Pontiacs and early 50's thru I believe 59 Olds. The main difference being the torque tube style in the Buick.
The bell housing will only accept those style transmissions!
Be careful they are somewhat fragile when beat on, I have broken 2 in my Pontiac!
Some parts are out there for them, but can get pricey.
Great looking Buick my second favorite 57 automobile!

The cylinder type speedometers were problematic and that's why they didn't last long on the production line. They look cool as hell but the cylinders fluctuate every time you hit a bump so its hard to tell an accurate speed and they are very delicate and a pain in the ass to work on and calibrate. We guarantee our repair for 1 year or 12,000 miles.

Buick had starter on pedal for years, My 39 & 40 had it. Worked very good. If not all it needs is a good cleaning. Iceman
