Projects `47 Chrysler 3 window-Adding complexity.

There has been a Ton of work done here since the last post, and another Left turn regarding the finished product...the title of this thread is very apt.







There has been some marginal body-work performed here decades ago, and I can't let it go. I have run the lead out of the factory joins and the old repairs, which then confronted me with more choices that had to be made, and it made it harder to preserve the original patina I was hoping to save...
On a positive note, I have concluded the Jaguar front-end install and brake upgrade





Yes...they are air bags in there...





I am finally having a win with the body work, should see primer next week.

Good news is the container has arrived from LA and the Jim Meyer Racing rear-end 4 bar kit will be available soon, and I can get it back on it's feet soon.

Glad to be able to inspire you. Did you notice the forward stretch on the rear fender?
That´s kind of important to balance the design.
I assume it´s so short as it looks like Chrysler cheaped out and just used the same fender on the four doors as the two doors, but the standard item sure looks strange.

 

Been spread thin in the workshop lately, however week-ends are for rubbing bondo (no pun there)
I have finally got the body in primer...rear suspension upgrade next...

 

Looking good. I'm getting there. Waiting on a right rear fender to show up from the lower 48. Piecing together two trunk (Turtle) lids to make one. Then on to body work.

 

Casper50, are you piecing together a skin to a frame, anything else would be a task...


The Jim Meyer Racing rear end kits have arrived...not what I ordered though...must have made at least 6 International phone calls to them to refine this order, and I still didn't get what I wanted.

The cross member and bracing for the factory parallel leaf rear will be removed, along with the bracing which is part of the inner boxing plates.
The area will be reinforced with pieces fabricated and welded in to duplicate the rest of the frame and the 4 bar cross member will take the place of the factory cross member

 

I have two trunk lids. The original is rusting on the bottom, the 2nd one was stored for years against a barn sitting on the top edge so it's rusty. I've cut the better bottom off and transplanted it to the original. I'm at work and don't have access to my photos. See the following almost to the bottom.

casper50, looks like you have got control of that trunk lid, I would have thought they would be heavier than they are, it is a large panel.

 

Another big day setting up the rear 4 bar into the frame

We have widened the 4 bar cross member for better fit into the Chrysler frame





The cross member penetrated clear through the frame rails, giving a better purchase to resist torque loads





The cross member was TIG welded into position








We still have to create some clearance for the rear coil-overs to allow the rear of the body to lower onto the frame, however the stance looks killer, it has been over 6 months since we have seen the car back on it's feet, it will be a big motivation to push forward...

 

I thought you were using an 8.8, that appears to be Foulcan rear end?

I do have an 8.8 rear that lived in there for some time, and yes this is a narrowed Falcon Diff...jury is still out on final choice...Altra9 blew me out of the water with their quote for their 9" with 11" drum brakes @ $6,500.00

 

The expected clash between the trunk floor and the 4 bar components is not as bad as I had expected, the upper coil over mounts, the diff housing back and the E brake mechanism were the only clearance issues...the spare tire well had to be removed and the trunk floor extended

The clearance holes for the rear coil-overs cut in the trunk floor have been capped with covers formed in the Pullmax, which allowed me to prepare and paint the trunk interior...bit of a milestone for me...





The frame was rolled out from under the shell to finalize welding the 4 link rear components that were previously tacked in place

 

Looking good. First paint is a great feeling.

 

You're doing fantastic job. These big butt MoPars really have some character even though the big crowd seems to disagree.

I have been going to add more content here for the past 2 weeks, just too burned out when I get home from the workshop...

We concluded the rear end install




Then stripped the frame bare to abrasive blast and paint





Because there was some thought of doing a rub through paint job, I laid down some 2K red oxide color





before wet sanding and applying the Military Blue top color





I am now beginning to reassemble the components to the body and get it mounted on the frame...

 

That blue is really nice.

Had a bit of a win today, the rubber parts from Steele rubber were cleared through Customs, as well as the Fulton 800 Visor purchased through the HAMB for sale section...that means I can now get the frame bolted up under the body, and other parts concluded.

More panels hung and adjusted...

 

I like this Military Blue color....

What is the paint code # or source?

 

Dwight, I mixed the color on the bench here from left over paints from previous jobs...essentially it is based on Kingfisher Blue with black and white added until I came close to matching an area of original paint under the hood.
There are paint pages out of original color books on ebay under 1947 chrysler which show color names and codes

 

Love the resourcefulness on the paint! Way to go.

Front sheet metal has been abrasive blasted then Epoxy coated and I am now working at getting it straight





All this adds another dimension to the build process...clearly I can't live with a ratty car.
