Gary is right, there were a number of bad crashes from push starts that went wrong, including several at Lions, where the push start was down the track towards the starting line...stuck throttles got several cars destroyed...stuck throttle got a beautiful '34 sedan with a blown Chrysler destroyed on the push road at Fontana .... still, they were fun to watch, less fun to do.

This is one week after Ramchargers crashed at Ubly. Ramchargers appropriated a new car body off the lot at a local dealer, installed what body parts that were still good along with the drive train from the crashed racecar and continued on with their scheduled match races.

A bit of history (just not in motion). This is Jim Crooke standing next to his "Assassin" digger, with none other than Bob Muravez in the seat. Jim was from the Seattle, WA area and came down to SoCal to pick up the pieces to what eventually became his SOHC dragster. I owned a dragster trailer company at the time, which is when I first met Jim. Anyway, Jim stored some of the "pieces" for his car in my garage at home (I was living in Torrance, CA) and met Muravez, Nye Frank, etc. As the car came together, Bob was selected to be the "test pilot" on the shake down passes at "the Beach". Here is Jim's story...

  13. No not the Freedom Machine, although I did drive that one for Tom Dawes. It's Jack Doyle's Slider AA/GD in the late summer of 1968 with Doyle standing behind me on the line.

Jack will be one of the inductees at the International Drag Racing Hall Of Fame ceremonies March 2016 in Gainesville. I have the pleasure and honor of being Jack's presenter and I'm looking forward to it.

  21. The Jolly Green Giant! Owner was Bob ???? Mind is AWOL this AM, but that was a fun car to watch. The car was built about the same time as Steve Bovan's Nova. They did some "match races" at Irwindale a couple of Saturdays when there was nothing for them to race in class. The big green Impala was fun to watch make smoked in passes, but, damn, couldn't he have put that blown rat in a heavier car?!!

I believe that the owner of the Jolly Green Giant was Bob Davis.

I remember him from Fontana, Irwindale, Lions, and other venues around Southern California in late 1965 and early 1966. He bought the car out as a 396/427 horsepower, 4-speed car. Note the "dealer plate" in this early photo from Fontana. After a couple of months in that format, he converted the car into a fuel-burning funny car.

I don't think it was around for very long.

I'd like to try to make a street machine out of this car but I think there would be too many 'blind spots'.
