  1. Looking for something cool,
    Visually old appearing
With a valve, that can handle today's gas.

    Really?

Should be interesting to see how this all fits on the car

  7. We used sight tubes on homebuilt / experimental aircraft years ago, they probably still do. Of course that was where the fuel tank was right behind the instrument panel.

Check out the "boy racer" catch can/surge tank sight glass setup, don't have a tap, but very compact.. I think the sight tube is about 5/16'' outside diameter.. 366738546.jpg

  13. I got this... It's a direct acting gauge from a military Cessna Birddog. Set into a tank from a Fordson E27N

Holy crapoli, that's the coolest thing I've seen come down the pike in ages.
Vicky, when I saw your thread; these old glass bowls came to mind immediately cuz you wanted something with age and character.
I just couldn't figger out how to incorporate one into a sight gauge.

Clem, did you put this together? Bravo if you did.
I don't do the "like" button thing.......but I can change.
This is right up there with those cool repro. Halibrand gas caps that one of our fellow Hambers' is making.
That would be a candidate for tech week. (Next year).

The sight glass may look cool, but the thought of a tube of glass filled with gasoline some where on a car could spell disaster and FIRE!
Just my opinion, but I tend to see the glass as half empty sometimes.

I would love to see a detailed build of Nutrocker's fuel gauge, if that's at all possible.

If it broke you wouldn't be a glass half empty kind of a guy because it would be all the way empty. In all seriousness glass sediment bowls have been around a long time and work quite well. The only time I saw one break was when it was dropped on a concrete floor. The sight glass tube is most likely made out of pyrex and that is quite tough stuff.

Glass sediment bowl are quite thick, and the bowl shape is inherently strong.
A glass sight tube as used on steam boilers as pictured on the original post are not nearly as strong as a sediment bowl, and are quite easily broken if struck by something, I know because I broke the one on the steam boiler in our 1st homes basement.
I am glad the valves still worked and I was able to stem the tide of boiling hot water!
I have seen the cheap tubular glass fuel filters break and start an engine compartment fire. The end result was a totaled OT Mustang!
Glass and gas are just not a good combination.

As was suggested above, airplanes still use those. I know Aircraft Spruce sold them a few years ago, and other suppliers do also.

Thanks TB33. Saw those, went through the entire thread. Incredible build, and a damn handsome rod. I was hoping for a little peek of what 's underneath the bowl. I can't imagine a vertical, straight-line float and linkage, with the short throw of the arrow pointer.

Even if the sediment bowl was to break, I doubt you would see leaking gas. No worse than a vented cap anyway.
