I have a '41 that has the original ignition key set. My understanding is that this is just an on/off switch because of the foot starter pedal.

What year did GM start having a off-on-start ignition?

    Thanks

Hell if you are doing an engine swap just stick a push button starter button under the dash and call it good.

Trucks with the Six engine didn't get a key start till 1960 (!) they still had the food pedal in 59 on standard shift Six cylinders.

I had thought about the button. But the stock ignition has the flexible "conduit" and the end modified.

Would the 49-52 cars have a start position?

1949 was when they went to the dash button starter in cars. 53 first year of the key start.

If you are going with a newer motor and want the key start a mid 50s Olds ignition switch will go right in the dash and have start along with accessory positions,I used one from a 53 Olds in my 37 Chevy and had it rekeyed to my original 37 key. Since I was still running a 235 I rebuilt a foot stomp starter and installed it so now I do not use the start position on the switch but glad I am using the 53 switch since I can turn it to the accessory position to listen to the stereo since I do not think the original switch had it.

Or use a 53-56 chevy car switch, or a 55-59 chevy truck V8 switch.

I was thinking one of these. But sounds like it was still just a on/off.
