The 8"ers're significantly lighter, only 35 lbs more than the Chrysler 7 1/4". I'm running a Ford one from the early '60s. They have lots of parts availability (including a mini spool), and gears down to 4.56. Joe, however, went to a 9" after lunching a couple of those 8"ers, but he's putting out roughly twice my HP. I'd be willing to bet Mr. Flyer'd blow the 8"ers as well.
I`m running a 9 inch because there are as many of them as there are small block chevys and parts are easy to find and cheap. You might want to rethink the mini spool as they are illegal.
Back in the T-Timers car club days of the 1960s our police adviser told us that "Illegal was a sick bird".
the rules are no welded spiders or mini spools. I can understand the no welded spiders, but not the not mini spool part. You can`t get to the rulebook online any more without being a member, which ain`t gonna happen with me. Besides, how are they gonna know unless you bust the rear in half. My rulebook is out of date. I`m running a full spool with the only difference is more tooth contact than a mini.
Interesting. Well that's going to let the 8" Fords out (if you choose to follow that rule), unless you want to make up your own full spool.
I'm not really clear about the rearend width. Is it against the rules to cut one axel side down to make the pinion in the center of your chassis, I found a 8 3/4" Chrysler that I think came out of a van.. The pinion is not in the center of the axel housing. Bearing flange to bearing flange..So if I cut one axel tube and axel down to put the pinion in the center of the chassis is that against the rules..What is the minimum axel housing width. And I do have a spool for that rear...
I suppose technically it is, but that'd only be 3" total at most. I'd have no problem with that little, doubt anyone else would either. Personally though, On both the Barn Job & 'Brick (#1) I found it less work to swing the rear & one side mount over a bit than to cut & re-spline an axle.
I should think you could narrow it to the width of some other stock rear end such as a 8" Maverick or a FWD S-10 rear, approx. 48" backing plate to backing plate.
I think the SDRA rules have a Min. 52" track width preferred, The NW/Vr rules require a min,56" center to center of each tire.

I am old and been married 30 years, what more do you want from me. So sorry about spelling your last name incorrectly, Tim. Oh wait, I don't see a mis-spelled last name.
Girls look great in the picture , but if I wanted to see a old dude I would just look in my mirror. So in lies the problem, as I have no car to work on that leaves to much time to mess with the computer.
Speaking of time spent messing with a computer ...... I was noodling about, following ordering some suspension parts on-line, and stumbled across this, from The Antique Nat's meet at the Pit in June. As my buddy, Tom, says; "It's nice to have tin that gets noticed."
Well, kiddies, Time once again to hit the bricks for Bako and Butch's third ANRA meet of the year. These August ones've been pretty hot since they had to back off on running'em at night (and not as "cool", in either definition), so there're typically fewer folks there. Perhaps I can go a couple rounds? "Film at eleven" (Wednesday or so), of course.
Best of luck this weekend at ANRA race. Butch says it may be in the 90's, a cooling trend for Summer Nationals. Famoso Raceway in summer were racers spend more on good AC for their puller than they do on engine parts for the race car.
