  2. As you mentioned, the block ( 2nd ) tower built in 1970 is now just a memory. Happily, I have started recreating the original BeeLine Tower! How cool will it be to see it in person! So many only got to see it in pictures like this one.

One more. Bit new for the H.A.M.B. cutoff but helps to explain where some of the Anglia parts went and how Little Hoss Too? may or may not have ended up in Hawaii.

Very entertaining Chevrolet propaganda film with flaming brakes, bombs and a pre "Dukes" persuit jump.

"Last Chance Gas" may have been at Scottsdale and Pinnacle Peak. Airfield, tail end of Deer Valley?

Been stuck inside for a few days with a bad back and got a point of view from the 19 Ave. end of the Deer Valley runway on Google Maps. Not the same point of view but matches up pretty close to the video above.

Also saw this in a May 2011 issue of Hot Rod Deluxe. Local tire recapper Bill Moxley mentioned in posts # 482 & 577 selling tires out of the back of his Caddy.

The family was down in the phx area a few weeks ago. We drove down main street in mesa, it was kool to see all the old neon motel signs from the past. Two stuck out in my mind one said it was refrigerated and the other said baths. Just two things you take for granted now.

  14. Credit to Chuck's Speed Center of Phoenix, AZ for construction of this piece of art. I watched the sign painter putting on all of that real gold leaf. The Googie\'s Willys at Chucks 7-67.jpg

It looks like Dave Workman's "Thrifty Swifty" Maverick with Advanced Auto ( while he worked there) sign on the door. Now he goes by "MR.WORKMAN"[IMG]

Here's a few more bits to add here.

This pic is from an article on the Scarab sports car from Sports Cars Illustrated, June 1958.

Terrain looks familiar and at a second glance I could just read Maricopa County on the traffic cones. Pretty sure this is Luke Auxiliary 2 from post#454 at about Grand and 163rd Ave. By the way, if anybody knows a Owen Gibson, he mentioned he has film of a race at this field on the Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields website. Maybe you could sweet talk him into posting it somewhere.:)

Looking through a Rod & Custom Street Rod Quarterly, Fall 1971 and saw mention of Ron Olmstead in "The Summer Saga of the J-Kamp Roadster" story.

These were screwed to the wall in the hall to the back and restrooms of the first and last Bill Johnson's Big Apple for who knows how long. Got some quick shots just before the doors closed and everything went to auction. I think one sign next to the '60 Ford said Park Central Mall Car Show?

  23. Sorry to hear that Bill Johnson's closed up. Used to eat there a lot. Good food and great surroundings.

Also, here's the building neighboring Herb Stevens shown in post #73 after rehab.
Seems it was originally C.P. Stephens Desoto, 915 N. Central.
