Gorgeous Super Modified. The picture of the race car on the beautiful flatbed hauler is delicious. Let's go racing! Thanks. TEB

As a matter of fact Parnelli also said he loved the car. The very day he received the pictures He called me. He said he sure would like to have the car but he already has 25 cars and at his age he doesn't know what he will do with them. PS: shakedown at Darlington Speedway ran with the pack over 100 MPH. I don't have time to take it to other vintage race car shows. Wish someone did.

That is a fantastic car but I must make what I believe is a correction. As the car is based on 1960 designs from the San Diego Racing Association, the correct term is "Modified Sportsman", which was ultra popular in San Diego from about 1958-1961. The Supermodified really did not come along until about 1962, and the Supermodifieds also began to have low-tech wing air foils on top as well. This is still a great reproduction of a Modified Sportsman car.

Around the Alabama Mississippi/ Georgia area we call these cars Skeeters/ Super modifieds/ Open comp cars. But any way I think the Original Vels car was towed to Mobile Alabama for a series of races for these cars. I think a driver named Lover Boy Bob Hogle was to be the pilot. Well the bad part the car caught on fire and was destroyed and the Calif boys had a long haul back home. No interstates to speak of back then. I was NOT at this event as I was in the military at this time... One last thing Frames I have looked at your post on your builds and you do very nice work.. I am looking forward to progress on the hudson/early sprint and this car.. Thank You... Bobby

K9racer. I have been told that about the fire before. 1961 the cage was cut off and a sprint car roll bar, sprint car tail and a big Ford engine was installed. Driven by Ray Crawford. I have talked to Jack Clegg several times. He made no mention of the fire. I have a picture of the sprint car. UGLY.

That is incredible. Some cars just have the right look, and that's one of them.

As for Parnelli, I think he'd rather have his Bronco back. ;) :D

Over here in san diego (eastern part) a guy built a replica of the old bronco. He was contacted by the owners of the original bronco and was tld he must change the appearance because he did not have the permission of the owners. Parnelli found out and contacted him asking if he could come see it in person. Parnelli approved of everything on it but the guy still had to remove the decals. Kind of a cool little story bout the old oly

Here are more cars from the San Diego Racing Association during the 1960 racing season.

Nason [Du Pont] YS3871B the car always looked white in the old magazines but Jack Clegg sent me some color photos. It was yellow. I used the the lightest yellow I could find. By the way the owner Omar Danielson was no dummy. he only hired the best drivers. He was 89 years old when I started collecting parts for this car about 15 years ago. He always bragged about the "Intercepter" engine. As soon as I get a scanner I will post a picture of the ugly sprint it was made into.

  28. agreed, pretty much what I said at first glance, its one of those cars that makes you say "wow!"

    I wonder why they would run a Y-block Ford in 1960 ?
