  1. It was 1960 when Neil beat Red in the Speed Sport roadster for middle eliminator at the March Meet. He wasn't supposed to. Red had him covered by quite a bit on ET. Do you remember how Neil's crew went nuts when he beat Red? Jumping and hollering, and falling out of the back of the push truck! I asked Red about that race a couple of years ago at the HR reunion. I asked how he let Neil get around him. Red said " I was asleep on the flag. I had a habit of that, and Neil knew it". Lyle gave me shit about it all the way back to Arizona"!

The blown ' Speed Sport ' roadster and Mooningham's '554 Fuel Coupe, ' were the two best drag racing hot rods of all time bar none

The one thing they both had in common were the exhaust pipes going full length to the rear of the car, and what a great sound they made

I was fortunate enough to watch them both at San Gabriel, the wind was blowing, and for some reason it really magnified the sound as they both reached the top end...sent chills down my spine, still does just thinking of it...

The Leffler - Loukas car beat the Speed Sport roadster for Top Eliminator at the 1959 Cordova World Series. There were three attempts made, each time the Speed Sport fired but would barely run, finally Leffler - Loukas got a single for the title.

Hey Dean you should post up the photos of your dragster with FE power we need to see more dragsters with Ford engines. And tell the story of where you got it from.

Always looked when the Modified cars came to the starting line and hearing the engine at about 6,000 RPM's when they took their foot off of the clutch.

A few posts earlier, we covered the "Iron Mistress," and, just like that, George Klass posts a picture of the other donor engine car, Bill Coburn's Fiat competition coupe. Looks like someone "colorized" this picture...Bill owned Coburn Glaze, and raced a number of cars, including this fuel Chrysler A/C that ran a torque converter...along with the 554 coupe and the Speed Sport roadster, this was a favorite of mine...LOUD!

This looks like an altered, but as the designation on the door says, it is a street roadster...Half Moon Bay, don't know whose it is...guess it could have been a handful to drive

I just came across some Tom West shots, this is one, hope he doesn't mind me posting a few...he is one of the great drag racing photographers around....this is Riverside, not sure whose car it is.

Quality Auto from Northern California racing Bradford & Sons...I believe that Pete Ogden, who build the chassis for Pure Hell, also build this chassis.

and, speaking of which.....now Chrysler powered, maybe Larry Huff driving??

Carl Olson in the Ewell, Bell, and Olson car...Jack Ewell was a pioneer drag racer who also ran the counter at Mickey Thompsons....

This car was painted a sort of metalflake teal

Jeep Hampshire in the Caspary and Stokey fueler, at Lions...maybe James Warren in the other lane?

Butters & Gerard, from the Pico Rivera area...these guys were also pioneer drag racers who started out with a deuce coupe with a flathead in the mid-50s, ran a competition coupe and several fuelers....probably Bill Butters driving

This car still exists and is currently at Mike Roth's Indiana shop to have some work done on it.

"I just came across some Tom West shots, this is one, hope he doesn't mind me posting a few...he is one of the great drag racing photographers around and also responsible for the recreation of the Beebe and Mulligan fuel car...this is Riverside, not sure whose car it is"

Actually it is Dave West who had the Beebe and Mulligan car re-popped. Tom the photographer's creations run to models (Milestone Development). He is also associated with the other kind of models as his static shots of cars quite often include some of the opposite sex.
