Thanks for posting this pic of my hometown, Barstow, CA. This is the corner of 2nd and Main, back in 1949 the Form Theater was where the Sears store is in this picture. I saw one of my favorite old car movies right there - The Big Wheel, starring Mickey Rooney.

  7. Here are some night photos from New York City, 1940s/1970s. I love the atmosphere of these photos.

I wish I could walk around in that era at night. Then I'd probably take pictures all night long.

That 1972 Plymouth was me then. I was a Yellow Cab hack , at night . I owned the night , taking folks to the after hours clubs where it was BYOB and hauling them to a safe destination as I listened to their affairs and hid their secrets . I shall forever hide those secrets as what goes down in Yellow cab #9 stays !

Just love these - simpler and much better times...you appreciated things more back in the day.

Anyone know the history of Mid-State Speedway in Morris N.Y.?

Tipton Speedway was located in Altoona, PA. and was a mile and half long wooden board speedway that was built back in the 20's.
Until recently I had never heard of it but just the idea of building a mile and half long speedway completely made out of wood with 30 degree banking back in the 20's must have taken years to finish.

Swi66- thank you for the pictures from the Connecticut Dragway. I grew up only a few miles, as the crow flies, from there (a few more miles as the Dad sneaks down the back dirt roads one Sunday afternoon.) I used to be able to hear the louder cars quite well and almost make out what the announcer was saying. I was only able to make it there a couple of times before it closed up and was sold.

It's from a 1960s "Look at Life" film on YouTube called "Down in the Dumps".

I had to go back as I thought some cars looked familiar!! Central garage, New Breed..I crewed some in MP in early 70's for a friend and ran some myself in Brackets in mid/later 70's..Don't think I was there after 78'...Was about a 1/2 hr ride for me and was neat because on show days you got to see [and touch] the big boys cars from the magazines...Any one have a pic of the Camaro that stood on its rear bumper? When it came down it pushed the whole nose up, flattened the headers and oil pan..I think the car was orange and a black guy drove it, well for the couple feet forward it went...Think I heard the fellow turned white...

There are times when wearing a tiger suit is just not worth the trouble. Especially when your tail gets caught in the fan belt.
