Projects Screw It Im gonna go for it! 36 Ford coupe to be

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by lowcoe, Jan 17, 2011.

  1. Thanks Raid. That's kinda how I was feeling.. The first one kinda works with the bones that I have and hints to the cars origins . The second one is a photoshopped 3 window coupe top that , honestly, I'm not very confident that I could pull off with my skill and tool set...

I think I like #1 except for the little pinch at the rear of the door/window. I like the top line because it retains just enough of the existing sedan line as proof of what you have accomplished. I also think it would be easier to do. #2 is a little too much of a bubble for me. I'm sure you will do it well.

Both photoshops look good but that first one really feels right to me and looks like you could accomplish that with what you have already. I love this project and I really look forward to seeing it come together.

Looking good! The new profile will be worth the effort.

It looks like #1 is the winner good choice.....never slag those skills man youre a real inspiration....it took me looking back a few pages and comparing to the photo shopped ones to see that moving that rear section back a bit really makes all the difference.....very brave of you to cut it back up and do it again kudos! the new door lines look great only one minor thing i've noticed when comparing some of the example photos is that your doors go straight up at the rear several inches from the beltline as opposed to those that start to slope or taper forward at that point i'm sure theres a reason for it to do with the doors you started with

  8. Thanks guys. I'm so excited right now because my wife said I can go to Gene Winfield's class up in Mojave in two weeks! Hope there's still room. I called and got the old fashioned answering machine so I'll call again first thing Monday morning.

Edit (when I said my wife said I could go I meant she would take off of work and watch her stepkiddos for 2 days). Without the explanation I come off sounding a little p whipped!

  9. That is some big improvement but I agree with Nailhead-Av8. If you can make the forward rake of the doortop star at the point just above the beltline I think you will get a better flow. I do understand why it starts where it is now and lower it is a lot of job but the over all look and flow will be worth it I think.
Building a car like this takes a lot of work and patients . Big kudos to you for never giving up and I hope there´s still room for you at Winfields class. Man that is something I wanted to do my self.

  10. Gonna submit this to the photoshop thread. Cut the roof apart and laid it forward. Had a donor piece from another sedan that I'm gonna use to clean up some of the previous roof patchwork mess. Trying to decide if I need to move the whole roof back further on the catwalk or if I like this...., ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1429993327.015844.jpg

yep there right about the door tops
its taking two steps forward and then one back but it will be worth it

  13. Ok. Fixed the door top as suggested. Here's the photoshop versions with the catwalk remaining longer and the existing roof line as it lays now. Second is shorter catwalk/ longer roof, which still looks like Kenneth's roof....

Personally I'm liking the catwalk longer. ( also less work ;). ). ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1430014687.345208.jpg

I, personally, like the look of the shorter catwalk, but understand the appeal of less work making it look not quite as good to you. But you have put so much work into it, that you surely don't want to make this choice on how much more work it will be, right? ;)

What if you took maybe 3/4"-1" or so out of the A pillar?

I original liked the catwalk left as it currently is but now am indifferent to either way. With the current version, I like the flow of the b pillar and the door top. But by moving the window back and narrowing the cat walk, the hood to the roof and on to the trunk has better balance.

  17. Staring at the pics I just realized they both have moved the roof back... See original pic submitted for photoshop. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1430020438.335312.jpg

I guess I'm moving the roof back...

Actually I was hesitant to throw my 2 cents in too many cooks etc. but I think it makes a world of difference. Thats only because I've loved this body style since I was a little kid when I found 2 of them in the bush one was upside down deep in a thicket of 30 year old trees the other 200 ft down the side of a gulley and half buried...... man the dreams I had.....but what can a 11 year old do about trees and gulleys? Still haunts my memories though...... any way I'll snap out of my reverie and say that you already had the proportions right just moved forward a bit the roofline in the first pic with your new door profile will be tits

  20. I think that in second version ( the first photoshoped one)you got the proportions all right. The roof flows with the lengthend doors and the rear doesn´t look too long.If I can vout I´ll go for that one.

  21. I catch what your doing, by adding to the top if the door it changes the shape of the door jambs & then into the roof. But by not changing the window opening , this gives the door top weird consistency.

I'd work with this one , I like this one.
    image.jpg
But take the door top ,,, from the front curve where it's narrowest
And smoothly increase the the door tops width , so that it's constantly getting bigger all the way to the curve at the quarter panel. As the door top begins it's curve decent it should become thicker faster. The lower rear curve of the window opening will need to be moved closer to the front, and the flat spot will be gone.
Just by eye - the thickest part should be about 2.5 times ticker than the narrowest.

  22. Woulda been much easier with some $1200 coupe door tops..,, Let me clean things up a bit and we'll see. Like I said before I'm hitting my technical build limit with my tools and skill set. I think it went from about a 2 on my first attempt at creating the rear of the door to about a 6.5 now. I can live with that I think...

Here's some motivation from Moose over at the photoshop thread.
ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1430060031.029777.jpg . The door top isn't as fat as it looks in this pic. I'd say it's pretty even from the a pillar back to where it ends.....

A little too much for me. As was said above, you are brave.

  25. Ok here's 3 different positions. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1430081418.199301.jpg
First one is 6 inches back on the catwalk with 7* taper over initial setup. This is same as last post.

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1430081436.619536.jpg
Second is only 5 inches back from initial position with less tilt forward. Almost original I think. I didn't measure cause it wasn't speaking to me.

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1430081461.804882.jpg
Third may be the winner again extended 5 inches back with 5* taper/tilt forward.

    Brave? Dumb

  30. #5

A little forward pressure on the roof panel to dome it up just a tad. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1430085499.044309.jpg

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1430085612.742850.jpg

    And #1 again.
