I am trying to get my coupe up and running by the summer and I realize I am running out of winter! My plan is to get it together and drive it through the summer and work out the bugs and take it apart for paint and upholstery next winter. I have recently finished building headlight bar and installing taillights. Now comes the rebuilding of the sheet metal for the roof[/ATTACH] Headlights2.jpg Tail lights.jpg

  12. After a bit of a search, I found an original cast iron Winfield crows foot yellow head. I managed to easily get the stock head off and am going to tackle the studs next, but going to mix up a concoction of Acetone and ATF to soak them. What aftermarket studs would be recommended to reinstall the Winfield.
Cylinder walls look nice and may have been a rebuild at one point. Pistons all have "STD" on them, so happy about that as well.

  13. @hb32, I used studs and nuts from Roy Nacewicz; www.fordbolts.com Helluva nice guy, excellent fasteners (he makes them in-house to Ford specs), and speedy shipping. Tell him Gary in Texas sent you :)

  14. Thanks for the quick reply Gary and you have seen pics of the Winfield so no need to post it here. Is there any difference in length of the studs from stock using the Winfield? Also, was thinking of using acorn nuts like the V8`s, is this a good idea? I am going to order new floor boards from him as well whenever I sell some parts I am not using.

  15. hb32 Good deal, only crowsfoot I see are really messed up on the deck.

  16. I will post pics when its in my hands  but Gary has had a sneak look at it for his thoughts.

  17. Nicest one I've ever seen!

  18. Thanks Gary. I will be looking for your guidance as well as the rest of the subscribers for help getting it on and running. Deciding if it is worth the effort to pull the motor and have inserts installed on the mains. Do not have the $$$`s for a full out overhaul, new rods, moving parts, etc and not looking to make bags of power, just a dependable driver.

  19. Snyders sells a set of head studs made from the same material as ARP at a reasonable price

  20. Like to see the photos of the head, I have owned 2 "Crows Foot heads and both have been Red. Both of the heads had the valve pockets opened up. I believe they would clear a 2" intake. Current head is a "milled and filled " head. I plan on using a Winfield Yellow head on my current build . It has the regular combustion chamber. This is a babbit engine, mains and rods both. This after all these years being brain washed to install inserts. I recently had a quote of $800 to bore A block for insert mains. Babbit quote was $525 to pour mains to fit crank. I no longer feel the need for the expense of high RPM's.

  25. Tossing this around as well and no plans to build a race motor. I will have whats in there looked at but will probably have the deck cleaned up as well as honing the walls.

We are lucky to have a custom gasket maker an hour away. It's a grandfather to son to sons and brothers little company that do everything by hand

Hey fellas! I'm hoping for a bit of guidance on what to do with my engine.

It's a 1929 model A sport coupe. I got it about a year ago and got it running, looks to be very well taken care of and kept inside (I'm the 3rd owner).

When i put water in, found that the head leaked into #4, pulled the head, measured cylinders to be .080 over stock, no ridges, looked great. Replaced with a stock head, rebuilt the carb, timed it, new points & condensor... runs great! The suspension and brakes have been completely rebuilt and work amazingly well.

Now I wanna hop it up a bit and NOT do all the wrong things so here I am asking for wisdom. I would like it to be a car to just drive around, no land speed record breaker or anything like that.

Kind of a... late 30s to 40s type of hop up.

I have looked into overdrive trans for lower RPM cruising and a 12 volt conversion is in the works. I like the looks of the Thomas and Lion heads and also the twin 81 downdrafts, but the dual updraft Zenith carbs are cool too. I have an FS distributor and Flamethrower coil ready for after the 12 volt conversion.

So... what to do? Or more importantly, what NOT to do?

What parts would give the best bang for the buck? Is a cam swap a good idea? Stipe touring or ? Does a header really do anything on a relatively stock engine?

I have way too many questions and have read all the threads I could find, yet not really a step by step process on how NOT to destroy the engine.

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for the help!
