Technical ***Santa's Banger Sleigh: December 2014 Banger Meet***

Today I picked up this 1928 early engine, all looks like it would be great,,,but the exhaust ports are heavily rusted, bores are 60 over, no crack but has this heavy rust in the exhaust,ports.
Wanted it more for its reciprocating assy, sump and oil pump, but do I keep this engine block for future use or just scrap?
Is there much "meat" in the exhaust ports for porting out, if so how much?

Getting back to the question of crankshaft modifications I surfed the catalog of one of the best known engine builder and to add counterbalance weights modify for seal pressure drilling etc. etc. cost would be $1000.

 

Not much information on these but apparently F100 T18, would they make a good conversion to my mild banger?

Brendan, I'd see about a T-5 conversion, they work really well and get you great highway speeds, also there is tech on how to install one with a torque tube if that is the approach you're going for.

Had 1 of those in a Inter 1 toner super strong box
1st gear is a stump puller never used on the road
the 1 you want to look at is t170

If the block is not cracked too bad it is worth saving.
Meat and Model A/B blocks are two words never used in the same sentence.
The ports have very little material to remove for porting. With the combined rust in the water jacket and the external rust it will be thin.
The early '28 blocks did not have the rib supports like the later ones around the rear main but probably will have the 5 bearings on the cam. The cam itself may be desirable if it is not too worn out on the center journal.
Take it apart and do a crack check, I wouldn't put a OHV head on it but as a Flatty it should be fine.

WHAAA--LAAAAh! We were just now prepping the rods to go back into my banger. I saw a faint etched name of "Cunningham A1". I looked up and called Greg Cunningham (1-310-5380605). He made them! I didn't ask if he had any in stock. The A1 stands for the rod bolt maker. They're out of business.

 

Need to find out where to find the extended snout fitted to that one, neat installation

Pulled the engine down today. Engine is a very early A, 5 cam bearing, beaver tail crank, pity about the exhaust ports being rusted, having a good look over they are too far gone.

Looks kinda like the stuff that I put up with 50 years ago, as a kid. It DO make good hand-grenades, though! Careful! Keep the revs down!

Neoprene rear main seals

On the engines I have with Chevy seals the rear main cap doesn't quite cover the Aluminum adapter and they will leak at that point. The fix from Taylor Engines was seal them at that point with J B weld. If you can see the Aluminum it will probably leak there. This is on both B and A engines

The Miller High-Speed head has a very good gasket made for them.
The gasket itself is a graphite composite with SS fire rings. cost is ~$130
It works extremely well for hi performance applications. Street driven.
If you are going to run full race equipment a solid gasket with wire O-rings can handle higher compression ratios.

BC, is that a Douglas or Frazier? I miss the look and smell of a real Christmas tree... everything grown locally here in GA looks like some leafy thing that belongs in a fish tank

 

My Model A/B automatic transmission kit just arrived
Question on crank bolts, could I get away with just 4 bolts or do I need to have the extra holes drilled into the crank?
Reason I ask is I just picked up my machined crank from my machinist.
Bring it back to him with the crank adaptor or just use 4 ARP bolts?
