I've never had cars with electric doors before. This has produced some paranoia about electrical failure. The added cable is to be able to mechanically activate the door latch. I need to clean things up a bit and snap a pic.

  6. That's a good move. I need to add an auxiliary cable to mine as well and keep forgetting….

    Here's the emergency cable.

Bo Bo, the original pic in the post #1949 confirms that the grille (front) is correct. This will become more obvious with the duplicate pose's that I'll do shortly. I need some sun, and maneuvering this thing around is not very friendly. 001 (7).JPG

With "things" percolatin', and waiting for some sun, lets do the dash knobs.

Prior to this I've had some limited experience with this plastic stuff. I won't be able to say that after all this.

This has taken a lot of thinkin', making mistakes, and finding out what won't work.

This is a look at the goal, and what we start with. P2270014-vi[1].jpg 001 (3).JPG

This is a better picture of the dash. The spotlight handle is visible, PA230159-vi[1].jpg 004 (3).JPG as is the dash knobs. I sent Jesse a drawing of what I thought they looked like, his reply was "yup". Original pics courtesy of (guess who?) Rik Hoving.

I get energized by a question like this. I spent about 45 minutes on the web looking for something that would look correct. I'll ask Jesse if he can give me a clue to work with.

This shows the plastic cut into strips, there's 3 of them ( not 2). They're glued together to get the width that's needed. The rough knob shown would represent a failed attempt to get it right. When you try to make a cut with an air saw everything melts back together when you think you're done. I had to cut the plastic with a fine tooth, sharp hand saw. 007 (2).JPG 008 (3).JPG 004 (6).JPG

    Not to hijack this thread.....
There is a great how to do article on making these knobs in the 2nd issue of the new custom car magazine "Traditional Kustoms" They also list sources for materials.
    Now back to you Jer.......

The cheapie miter box saw was excellent for nice, clean, straight cuts. 004 (2).JPG

And the plastic is filled with . . . ?

  19. Neat idea. How did you set up the angle cut on the knob blanks; doesn't look like one of the fixed angles built into the miter box.

008.JPG The plastic is pieces of green Lucite glued together. Nothing in the middle on these. I just carefully cut that angle by hand. When it comes to the shaping part there is some wiggle room.

A failed attempt that also tried to see what would, and wouldn't work. I will probably take a short break. 001 (13).JPG

003 (9).JPG 002 (12).JPG I need to be able to drill these knobs to fit on the window crank handles. Getting them perfectly straight isn’t as important as the dash knobs. I thought I could get them close enough by hand. I was wrong. I need to be able to drill these knobs to fit on the window crank handles recepticles.

I really needed to find someone with either a lathe or a drill press. I wasn’t able to find either one.

I solved this problem by finding a Northern Tool drill press and vise for less than a hundred dollars. I really don’t expect much out of this set up, but it sure does solve this problem.

There are times when a "Cheap" tool can do the trick.
