I am working on my 47 ford truck and haven't given the rear axle much of a look until tonight. I had been told it was original, but the PO really didn't know. Here is a picture of the back side of it: On the Top Left it had the following numbers (as far as I can tell): 1 888 618 (might be 1 868 618) On the Bottom Left it had the following numbers: 2 018 188 On the Bottom Right it had the following: 41 And the top right had the following: 18423 and then also the number 5 was stamped at a perpendicular angle to those numbers. Is this an original axle? If not, any clue as to what it might be? I can get more pics if needed.
My 52 had a Spicer in it. Which I think was also called a Dana. About the only thing I can recall is that it had 3.92 gears in it. I was given another 52 which had the same rear end under it. It was a 215 six and mine was a flathead 239 V8. But they had a removable cover on them, that I am sure of, although that was in the 1971-73 time frame. Clean yours a bit more and perhaps you will find more information there. Good Luck!
This is out of a '47 truck. Banjo with open drive and parallel leaf spring mounts just as it left the factory.
well, I did as you suggested. There is a tag with the letter W and then next to it the number 43 over 11 like a fraction. Also some numbers in the axle tube, but the only ones I can make out are 3 27 48.
I'm running into walls. If its a dana axle, there aren't enough numbers to correctly determine the specs. The numbers that are there are all really clear, but I can't find any others.
The engine that was in the truck when I got it was a Lincoln 337. I wonder if the axle came from the vehicle that the motor came from.
In my opinion, the "41" is the Spicer model number of the axle assembly, a predecessor of the model 44, I believe. Model 41's were used in '49 up Mercurys and Ford Station wagons and '48 up pickups....."up" meaning for several years, not forever . I think the 3 27 48 could be the date of production which would be consistent with '48 trucks. Of course, I could be mistaken on all points, but the opinons are free...... Ray
Ray, I think you are correct. after looking on the web for hours on end thats the conclusion I've come to. I appreciate all input and if anyone has anything else I'd love to hear it.
Not a 47 they are open banjo . Looks same as 48-52 truck to me . Mine had a ratio near 4.72 . I know 4 something can't remember . Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
could be a 41, although the later 50s Dana rears that size I've seen have the stop sign shaped cover. If someone with one of those trucks says it looks like theirs, then it's probably a 49-mid 50s rear. but I'm no expert on ford trucks of that era.
