I have what I believe to be a Ford 4 speed overdrive transmission with an aluminum case set up such that the shift lever is on the top cover of the transmission case (not on the tail shaft area). I was told it came from an 84 or 85 F150. The tag on the transmission reads as follows: top line: RTS BT JG4 Bottom line: E6TR KA 0069 Can anyone tell me the gear ratios inside? I am particularly interested in the overdrive ratio but all help very welcome. I am thinking of putting this transmission behing a Y block engine. If nothing else, please let me know where I can find information on how to decode the tag as a transmission shop and ford dealer were not very helpful. Thank you in advance! Pete
Jim, Many Thanks! Where did you get this information? The guys at the local Ford Dealership didn't have a clue what I was talking about.
more specifically, if you search google images for ford rts transmission ratios then this chart shows up pretty early in the search.
Jim, Many thanks. I tried looking in google but did not think of images. Tried a bunch of different asks to no avail. As a pointer: Is there a formal name for the metal tag riveted to the transmission that might have helped my search? Pete
No that I know of. Usually Ford manual transmissions are referred to by the 3 letter code, RTS in your case. I just happen to know that's important, from years of helping guys try to figure out what they have. and I was looking at images just to see what an RTS trans looks like, since I haven't ever messed with one. I stumbled upon the ratio listing accidentally It's not an easy game for a beginner.
Jim, I now wonder what kind of gears they ran in the differential. I added in a photo of the trans. Looks to be the length of a toploader with the shifter on the top where the top plate would be in a toploader. This version has the wide Ford bolt pattern in the front. I also have a RUG overdrive version that has the shifter on the left built into the tail shaft section. This too is about the size of a toploader and has both the small and larger bell housing bolt patterns.
