I am getting ready to paint my sandblasted frame. I would like a semi gloss finish to look like a old original faded frame. Any ideas on primers or paints? A search pulled up Rustoleum, Eastwood, Bill Hersch. Which will be best? Thanks.
You might look at the photos of my Deuce pickup,I painted it with Kirker S.G. Black in 2007 and it hasn't faded or streaked like the flat paints. I used this on the frame and the truck.HRP http://public.fotki.com/hotrodprimer/1932_ford_truck/
I did my 62 galaxies and 56 fair lane Victoria with SPI EPOXY PRIMER I SPRAYED WITH A 1.4 TIP BUT U CAN BRUSH IT ON ALSO.CAME OUT GREAT.
After blasting, I sprayed mine with self etching primer followed by John Blitz Black with hardener. 6 or 7 years later, it still looks good. I'm happy with it. Blue
I'd recommend a decent 2K acrylic urethane, the kind of product typically used on truck chassis and heavy machinery. This is what I used on mine after blasting http://www.resene.co.nz/automotive/technical/Acrythane_TDS.pdf simple systems, very economical and really bullet proof (it laughed at the brake fluid I spilt all over it last weekend). Tends to have a factory looking dull semi-gloss finish, should get your blaster to hose it on once he's done.
I like polane t industrial enamel by sherwin williams. It is very easy to use but requires a catalyst. I feel that it is the perfect coating for frames and chassis parts. Super tough and does not build and become too thick Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I've been experimenting with an asphaltum-based paint (similar to what Henry put on the Model A) - so far, I dig it. It stinks to high heaven and goes on super thin - but has the perfect 'eggshell' sheen. Most over the counter 'black' paint looks too blue or green to my eye - or ends up looking 'milky' (Rustoleum). Asphaltum is a rich black-brown. I can get some pics if you're interested.

gwhite, Yes I would like to see some pictures. Where do you get this paint? Do you have to prime it first?
I used PPG Pithane with hardener. The gloss is very low and it fills imperfections well. It's made for industrial iron, bridges, etc.
Cool, tell ya what, I'll do 4 samples, because application method and prep both seem to make a bit of a difference; 1 sprayed on bare metal (no primer) 1 brushed on bare metal 1 sprayed on primed metal 1 brushed on primed metal Give me a week or so and I'll get pics posted up.
I've been using a 2 part urethane sold by Diamond Vogle Paints that's semi gloss and tough as nails. Holds up better then any factory-type chassis black I've used.
gwhite - have you been able to complete the samples? like others, would be interested in seeing this. thx.
PPG DP40LF on a sandblasted base, followed by satin Bernardo Urethane. Black, black, just a bit of a sheen. Canuck
Not yet...will get to it soon; between family/work commitments and breaking my tailbone, it honestly hasn't been on my radar. Hopefully I can get to it soon!
