The shorter stroke of the 218 lets it rev a little more before it ventilates the block as well. Don't forget that in 53 the 230 was rated at 103...
Obniously I went with a T-5 trans, and made a simple aluminum plate adapter to bolt the trans to the stock bell housing with an indexing ring....
