Vintage shots from days gone by!

I want to say a very special "THANKS!" to the Library
of Northwestern University for these powerful poster
messages from 1942, the dark time when the U.S. was
beginning to throw itself into World War II. When one
reads between the lines, it's clear that the mood of the
country was a mix of anger, fear, resolve and more.
Many government agencies pushed every emotional,
philosophical and psychological button! Amazingy,
this represents just ONE YEAR in the battle for Ameri-
cans' hearts, minds and backs!

 

Even little kids scoured their neighborhoods for scrap for the war effort.
It was reported that a single scrap drive in late '42 produced an average
of nearly 80 pounds of scrap for every single American!

 

Just as during WWI, government reps and home economists campaigned
for conservation, efficient use, preservation and rationing of foodstuffs.




Millions of women saved cooking fat for use in making explosives. The poster
below reminds me of one of THE funniest WWII war-effort stories any of us
probably EVER heard! It was even mentioned in Ken Burns' documentary on
the war. Local groceries were often the most convenient collection stations
for cooking fat. Whether inadvertently OR intentionally comical , one grocer
placed a prominent sign in his front window reading, "Ladies, PLEASE don't
bring your fat cans in here on Saturday!"





The poster below is really a special WWII-era message on the state of technology
in the early '40s. If you notice the bottom notes, you see that electrification was
not yet truly nationwide, as some folks still used ice boxes. ADDITIONALLY,
old-fashioned spring houses and cold cellars (aka root cellars) were still common
enough to be worthy of mention here!

 

The UN never did SQUAT for wars!!---Hell, they were not formed until 1949!!!

Its actually called the cadillac interceptor. developed from 46 through to 49. & yes, they were doing the closed wheel wells before nash was. I have a couple more pics I`ll upload sometime.

Never mind the women- look at all the leg room on that plane!

 

The scene is Trafalgar Square, London. Difficult to date, possibly early post WW11. The bus is an AEC ( Associated Equipment Company ) who went on to manufacture the Routemaster - the iconic red London bus known the world over.
The model shown is possibly an STL2077 manufactured from 1937 to 1950.
The taxis are the well known Austin 12/4s of which there were thousands.
As regards the seeming chaos, snow notwithstanding!, well nothing changes - it is much the same today but a hundred times worse!

I love the 2 sided design studies.

I have lurked for 1600 plus pages and now i'm starting to feel like I might be contributing. I've been cleaning latey and have started with my desk. Everthing I've posted so far is just loose stuff thats been floating around on and in my desk. I have 1000's of old family photos and others I've bought at antique and junk shops over the years. It was the 1st pic of the thread then the 2nd that hooked me. The Vance grille was in the Vance Hotel just 1 block from Humboldt Bay in Eureka Ca. I even know a Vance from that family and picture 2 of the 19th century 20th century overlap, WOW! Thanks for the history lessons and all the great images guys.

Does the Buckhorn Motor Lodge still exist ?

 

Yes, but it may have recently stopped operation. The owners are quite elderly, as I recall. It is east of the Phoenix area on US 60 in Apache Junction. Its big claim to fame was the hot spring mineral baths on the facility. Lots of celebs and athletes were known to frequent there to "take the waters."
