Shoebox Fords- "Continental Kit"

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fordstandard, Jul 12, 2010.

  1. What is the story on - "Continental Kits" for Shoebox Fords?

    * I don't see many of them
    * Were they orig.options or are they custom /fabricated to fit from other cars?

*** Who sells them and what have you done-show pics

There needs to be a D.A.R.E program for continental kits gone wrong.

Cars that never need to be within 5 feet of a conti kit:

    '49-'51 Merc
    '49-'51 Ford
    '55-'57 Chevy

    And thats just a start!

in not a big fan off them but I would have to disagree with one car on the earlier post. They do look okay on 56 chevys imho

The Barris Shop built this one... with extended quarters... they really are needed when you want to use a Conetinental Kit.

My 50 Crestliner has one, believe to be Ford option. Have to run air shocks to use rear view mirror. I have often thought about taking it off. Probably will when and if it gets new paint.

O.K. I'll offer one up. I do agree with Rikster, these do look a lot better with extended quarters. This was my intention whenever I put this one on. But other projects got in the way and since this is the only one running and driving; I haven't done anything yet. I do like the Barris car.
    Thanks for posting it Rikster.

Lighten up, fellas, he's in Pennsylvania - can't help it. My dad and uncles in Northeast Ohio all thought continental kits were awesome on some cars, including shoebox Fords. It's an Eastern thing; you wouldn't understand.

Oh MY Gaaawd! the stock set ups are ugly as sin. destroy the cool lines of a shoebox. the Barris car looks marginal OK. maybe, just maybe, with extended quarter panels and Packard tail lites, etc. would have to be a radical full custom to make it work. some longer body styles look good with continental kits, so I ain't against them entirely.

Heres the continental kit on the '49 I'm currently looking at. Not a fan, hopefully someone else is and I can use the funds for tires.

That was the first thing that "had to go." Coronado kits arn't any better looking either.

To me, it looks like a spare tire with a cover attatched to the trunk. No bumper bracket extensions, no wide gravel pan. Could be wrong. Take a sideview and post it.

I doubt that FoMoCo ever produced them as a factory option, but they were a common dealer-installed feature in the early '50s. My mom bought a new '54 Merc with one; the day she turned it over to me, I took it off.

well, I lived in a semi-affluent neighborhood as a grade-schooler (lots of nuclear engineers) in the early 50s. Half the newer cars in the driveways had continental kits and wide white walls. Very popular, I always assumed they came from the dealer that way. When I became a budding hotrodder (as opposed to taildragger) we referred to connie kits as "manure spreaders" and as with 50Fraud, if we acquired a car so equipped, those things came off quicker than a prom dress.

Here is one from West Virginia, belongs to a friend.
I'm not much of a Conny Kit guy either but it must be a East coast thing!
Here is a '54 Olds and a '59 Impala both from WV.
