This was a Hershey 2010 find for me, last one I had went with a dirt car I sold in 1985. They were used on dirt track race cars and some early Bonneville and Dry Lakes cars. We could start a thread of photos of cars with Chrysler tube axles, I post a few later today. Does anyone know what year and model these were under when new?
Thanks but that axle is crying out for some Lock Ring Dayton wires, and a 1930's Dirt Car chassis and body.
The Franklin is much lighter, I have one in my tube axle collection. There, I admitted it, I have a tube axle disorder, passed on a $300.00 '37 tube at Hershey. It was a nice one too. Self controll was not a factor, I was out of money.
ive seen and had chystler ones, and they have 2 bends in them. i think thats a franklin like the one i have posted in the classifieds... which i cant seem to give away.....
Plymouth and dodge cars 30 till 38 except for: "After pioneering independent front suspension in the low priced field in 1934, Plymouth mysteriously (and quietly) abandoned the system for 1935." Both dodge and Plym went to coils and A frames in 38.
The 2 Bend Chrysler axle is a Mid-'30's Chrysler Product, The one in Question Is an Early~Mid '20s axle. I have the Double Dip Chrysler axle Now that will go under my Drag Sedan '32 Ford 2dr I have owned one of these Chrysler axles in the Past.. Super Neat Axle ! Wish I still had it for my '22 Dodge Build.
heres a 26 axle.... for reference http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1926...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20b44ddb58 heres a 27-30 spindle. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Dodg...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20b3ab7f6c this has i beam. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Dodg...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5888834fb8 but these do look similar. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Dodg...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e5e45f9c2
Trust me it is a circa 1928 Chrysler item, the double bend ones were under Dodge and Plymouths around 1935-36.
I have a double bend tube axle that came under a homemade utility trailer. Trouble is that they welded the spindles to the axle. 37 Kid, Sorry I missed you this year. Went by your spot.......
In automotive engineering parlance, an axle of this construction where the axle end straddles the spindle is known as an "Elliot type". The style we are most accustomed to where the spindle straddles the axle is known as "Reverse Elliot". Many brands of automoblie used the Elliot type (Including Ford) in the twenties. Most switched to the Reverse Elliot sometime in the early thirties. The Dodge /Plymouth "wavy" axles of the thirties are Reverse Elliot (As are all the Fords from 1928). Further, I've not seen any Dodge/Plymouth that had a "spigoted" construction with a separate forging or casting attached to the outer ends of the tube. That system was usually peculiar to Elliot style and was definitely used by Franklin. Aand also by Harry Miller.
I'd have to agree. The first picture is a '28 Plymouth, Elliot type, but a forged axle. the second picture is a '31-'32, Elliot type, with a pronounced bend, but also forged. The third is a '32-'33 tube axle, but Reverse Elliot. These are the oldest factory pictures I have, but I'll check some 20's repair manuals tomorrow and see if anything else applies.
nice! sounds like a good project. too bad i didnt get to run into ya at hershey. hope you liked where i signed my name in the most obnocshis spot
