Does anyone have any specs on a 460 Police Interceptor motor? I was told they only put out around 260hp but have an ungodly amount of torque. Any info will help. Thanks

Yeah they had 2 different versions other then the standard 460. There was the 460 Police edition and the 460 Police Interceptor.

was just curious i posted awhile back on a SCJ engine i have and couldn't figure out what the heads were. they ended up being Interceptor heads. kinda in between the SCJ heads and the DOVE heads in performance book i guess.

The 460 police motors were smag era engines. They have gobs of torque by default of cubic inches and a long stroke but, like any big motor from 1972ish to about 1988, they were choked down by smog pumps, EGR valves and all of the band-aid emmisions ideas of the time. Not great performers at high RPM.

true dat. but with that kinda displacement, you don't need to spin the motor to the moon.

If you have the opportunity, pull the timing cover & change the timing chain & gears. Use a set from about a '70 429. This will run the cam straight up, and put a large smile on your face:D

Long stroke? 3.85 is not really that long. I'd call it a medium length stroke.

I think the PI 429/460 motors built before 1972 had about 365 horse power if you have one after 1972 do the timing chain thing that really helps also the try older heads DOVE or COVE or C9ve pre 72, will bump up the compression. pre 72 was about 10.5 to 1 after 72 was 8.5 or 9 to 1

The police intercepter heads had the same size valves as the Cobra Jets. 2.19 intakes and 1.73 exhaust. The port size of the P.I head were small then the C.J but still larger then the stock heads.

    PORTS:
    Cobra Jet : 2.51 X 2.11 intake - 2.25 X 1.30 Exhaust

    P.I. Heads : 2.20 X 1.93 intake - 2.06 X 1.31 Exhaust

    Stock head:2.18 X 1.87 intake - 1.99 X 1.30 Exhaust.

Anyone have an idea what a complete driveline would cost for a 73 429PI with a c6 and a 9".

Yes there were 2 versions of the 460 for police use.

The basic was the 460 "Police" which was basically a passenger car stock 460 motor, with some cooling goodies.

The High performance motor was the 460 "police Interceptor" with its high lift cam and free flowing heads.

The only true way to tell which version you had was to pull the heads. Ford unfortunitly used the same head castings after 1974 and was impossible to tell which version you had. Most claimed they have a "police Interceptor" when they had just a basic "police" version

What did they use in the marine 460? I see lots of those around here and always wondered if they were any good.

    Cheers,

I remember we put some 429's in 4 door Torino's for calif police, I was supposed to design and build the drill fixture for installing the rear sway bar in 4 hours. I just ran copies of the blueprints, covered them with clear shelf paper taped them to the floor and center punched the locaations. on a test drive they were FAST.

in 1974, The Ford Torino equipped with the 460 Police Interceptor, was considered the fastest squad car of the 70's. With 2 officers in the car and a trunk full of equipement this tank could run 0-60 in 8 seconds and 1/4 mile of 15.4.

The 1969 Polara with the 440 was considered the fastes squad of all time, with mid 6 second 0-60's and 15 flat for 1/4 mile, but that test was also done with 1 officer in the car and no equipement in the trunk. The 1971 Ford Police Interceptor with its 375 Horsepower 429 would of been very close to this as well, but unfortunity it wasnt properly tested.

Either way, technology has come a long way, with ford/chevy/dodge now in the police market with their beasts runnin low 6 seconds to 60 and 1/4 mile times of 14 flat!

I have a carburetor with a Ford police part #. It's a basic 600cfm Holley. I got it from a 460 in a 74 Merc. Obviously someone swapped it on there using all factory parts. The rest of the engine looks like basic 460.

i like the 74-76 460 pi heads,i have several in my inventory.they have the big valves of the cj and smaller ports of the regular heads.it work on the street better than the cj.heads.i put a 69 460 w/74 pi heads in a 71 camero in the late 70's.the car was wicked.all ford running gear,4/speed toploader, and 9 inch rear.i finial sold the car because of the hassle that nhra put me through every time i ran,and when i won i always got torn down.

i have had three of the 72 429 motors and all three had differnt parts. the heads d2oe are always the same 2.19 1.72 valves 92 cc chambers the port opening are the same as the doves after the opening the ports are much bigger and the roof is 1/8 higher at the guild and the bowls are bigger and the short turn is better . the exhaust port looks odd and has a sharp turn over at the bottom the roof is real nice for a bbf head. guild plates and non-ajustable rockers and spring cups . the cams just under .500 lift and the dur. at .50 is 214. the block could be a 2 bolt or 4 bolt and the block dates are anything from dove-a 2 or 4 bolt to d1ve 2 or 4 bolt the crank is cast 3.58 stroke and the rods are cj d0oe and forged flat top pistons the oil pan could be the same as stock production or scj with a windage tray in the pan and a high valume pump. the exhaust manifold are header looking and real nice 2 1/2 openings . the valves cover where cast aluminum on most like the scj i have seen them with steel covers . the stranges parts the intake manifold it was a big port scj port mismatched with the q-jet style motorcraft carb . some had oil coolers and electric fuel pumps and a high valume water pump. i have raced these motors for years and the p.i. heads ported are the best heads of the stockers by far.

I happen to have a 74 460 PI engine sitting in my shop with the C6 still attached. The engine and trans came out of a Kansas Highway Patrol car. The car had been sitting in a field for many years, but at least the hood was on it. The engine spins freely and looks very clean under the valve covers. call if interested 816-507-9815.
