Drug this home from the Detroit cycle swap meet today...1966 650 Triumph...with a ron finch springer from the seventies. This one gets shiny and polished. I had thought about doing a short, flat track, style, but I might just go long and thin....whadda ya think???

Just finish what's already been done!
If it were mine, I'd extend the exhaust pipes upward, parallel to the sissy bar and fork, topped with fishtail tips... and apricot metalflake paint... and maybe a chain between the tranny & sprocket... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I already had the ribbed fender and solo seat and just stuck the bike together to get a feel for it. I like an 18 on the rear and I think the sportster tank works too....I agree on something different with the pipes...more custom.

Damn Hatch, pretty soon you will have enough bikes for all the Torrid Torquers to ride... it would be just like a recreation of "Wheelie and the Chopper Bunch." http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nice score Hatch! My buddy in Massachusetts used to build a lot of Triumph choppers and he used to use a 16" Harley wheel rim laced to a Triumph hub.He loved to run a 5.10X16 slick on the rear.He also used to run 21" sulkie wheels on the front with 2.75X21 tires. They had a nice spool hub which looked great but wasn't too much for stopping though.I suppose you could adapt a disc brake to them today. His were donr in the late 60's when stuff like that wasn't readily available. One of his first shops was shared with a guy(Dave Yetman)who used to make hardtails for Triumphs and other British bikes. He used to square mold a lot of the frames too for a trick look.Even though they were built up with plastic, they lasted well enough that there are still a few on the road today.

Gasser...yup..that was me...next time smack me upside the head so I can stop and waste some time with ya....I'm pleased with the deal...got it MUCH cheaper than he was askin...still gotta go to his house to pick up the rest of the parts.
Ray...I also got a 16" rear wheel I've gotta pick up from him...I'll mock it up with that too so I can make a decision...(kinda like the eighteen though) ...I'm familiar with the yetman name,, did some cool stuff "back in the day"
Frank...I'll be over on tuesday to pick you up on the 45....dress warm http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif you're ridin bitch!!!!

I think you should trade me that 18" wheel for the 16"er I have for my Triumph...
BTW, how wide is it and what size tire does it have on it?
Great find Hatch, great find.
Sam!
As a Post Script to Hatche's score... Yesterday my buddy Tim and I were at the hospital visiting one of our Town's historians who is I'll. She's in her 70's and lives in a pretty run down house. So we go over there to see what we could do to help her out when she gets out of the hospital... build a ramp, fix a gate... you know. Anyway, Tim takes me around back to see her garage that the roof has fallen in on... and inside is a 3 cyl Triumph Chopper! Spool fron 21" wheel, 16" rear, chrome motor, phsycho paint... it was WILD! Anyway, I'm going to enquire about it... for anything to get running and sell to finance my own.

Looks just about perfect as is.
The springer is distinctive in a subtle way..

Way cool Steve-o. I am a fan of Ron Finch so to have something of his on the bike is too cool.
Let me know if you're not gonna use the 16" wheel. That's what I need for my bobber.

I was talking with Ron awhile ago.A friend of mine had acquired a bike he built years ago and he needed a couple pieces to make it complete.Turns out Ron still has a few of those springers left to sell.My buddy Rich used a different tank and fenders as the tank that was on it was dented pretty badly. As I didn't have an example of Ron's work for my garage/cum/museum,I traded him some paintwork for the tank and two fenders.Really neat work too!

hatch,...did you see Ron there? I got a couple of those old NOS ribbed fenders and peanut tanks from him...
one day last fall, as my buddy was on his way home from work, he passed a guy who was pushing an old chopper out to the curb the night before gabage day,...he stopped and asked the guy about it, and the guy told him he could have it, just get it out of there. Turns out, it was an old Ron Finch Triumph from about '72, '73! My buddy actually had pictures from a chopper show at the 8 Mile Rd. Light Guard Armory in 1973, and this bike is in the pictures!
It's very distinctive, with a SQUARE frame, and alot of Ron's typical round rod, and wild psychedelic paint! He's planning a full-on, 1972 resto!

The 16" will ride better on a ridgid. Experience talking here. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
