Good morning. Tried to post these questions over on the Performance Years site a friend told me about as it may not be for this board, but I still can't post over there and I grow impatient. Hoping to get answers for the project. New to the Pontiac world and I'll probably have a few.
Some history. A couple months back I purchased a '77 TA to drag race with a nice healthy rebuilt 400, fresh 400 trans (also have a Muncie) and the posi rear etc. But...it is what it is and I just can't "like" the car, for that matter I'd rather have my '66 back. To much to do right now and just haven't been excited about the car with the exception of having something to take to the track.
So thanks to Flattop along comes this '55 Pontiac 2 door 870 wagon, now I'm excited. Engine is shot and don't want to use the manual trans or rearend (maybe) either. It will be here Wed. and I want to get moving.
Plan is for complete drivetrain swap. So here are the questions and the needs to fab, buy or locate a few items for those that have done this.
Instead of reworking the front control arms I'll probably purchase drop spindles/springs from?
S10 front brakes from the local pull yourself.
These cars were 5 on 5, I need 5 on 4 3/4. Rearend width's same or? and mounting brackets for springs, shocks? rear spring relocation? NO TUBS. I'll probably have to buy another set of rear Saltflats for the correct offset.
Need motor mounts.
Trans crossmember for both types.
First year for 12 volt system so no problems there.
Will be drag raced frequently. Factory weight is 3750 lbs, so I gotta get it down to like 3400.
Well, there's a start. Please post anything I'm missing and all suggestions you may have. If this is not ready for Power Tour, I will be one lonely man. She will go with someone else. Thanks, Bill
