i just picked up a universal 3 speed floor shifter from a discount bin at a local autoparts store. the price was cheap, so i picked it up hoping that i'd be able to use it in my shoebox.
has anyone done an install using a floor shifter on a ford 3 speed manual trans with overdrive?? i have heard that it can be done, and i have also heard that since it has o/d that it will not work. i'd much rather have a floor shift than a column shift, so any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance, kritz

The overdrive was a dash mounted switch(cable)? on those cars anyway. The way I see it you should be able to still use the overdrive unit, and that would kick ass.
I had to do the rigamorole on my Packard 3spd OD. It was an utter pain in the ass. I ended up doing it twice, once with a POS Mr. Gasket and then with a Hurst. The hurst unit's far superior.
There's no way to describe how it was done, other than it invovlved reworking virtually every piece of the hardware. It takes some chopping and welding to clear the solenoid.
I'm sure I was of no help at all, but their you go.

Of course these days, Mr Gasket owns Hurst...

well, a fairly simple bolt on of the shifter is out of the question!!! this sucker is gonna take some work. first of all, the mounting bracket when held in the "proper location" pretty much sits under the seat. not to mention that the mounting plate does a pretty good job of hitting damn near every overdrive component on the drivers side of the trans (solenoid, cable actuator etc). i'm prolly gonna give it another try using some unorthodox installation methods and see where that gets me. if nothing else, i'll have a shifter for the r p/u project!!
anyone have any pics of a floor shifter in their shoebox?? any helpful hints would also be appreciated.
thanks
