Boyd Cottington Story

My dad's buddy had an unrestored bone stock 34 Ford Coupe and Boyd Cottington was interested. So my dad's buddy, Kenny, said hed sell to him(Cottington) for the big money. I dont know what the price was but it was lots of money. Site unseen Boyd said he would buy it and send a check with his representative that was coming to pick it up. Kenny told Boyd he didnt want a check he wanted cash. So Boyd says somethin like ,Do you know who I am? Im Boyd Cottington!, and Kenny says, i dont give a shit who you are, i want cash. So Boyd got pissed off and hung up the phone. 3 Days later boyd called back and said he'd send the cash with the guy to pick up the car.

True Story.

O, im sorry, i forgott to mention this was a while back. Before Boyd went bankrupt. My dad and Kenny saw the car finished and it was pretty much a normal, high dollar street rod.....that he sold to some clueless person for 100grand+++++.

I know lotsa people like slammin Chip Foose, but I do know that when Boyd was going under Chip used his own money to keep the shop going long enuff to pay the employees and get the customer cars done while Boyd shows up one day in a new Porsche. Also Chip lost a bunch a money in stock that Boyd was paying him with cuz Boyd lied when Chip wanted to sell the shares. Next he knows they shop goes under. I have a buddy that designed a set of one off wheels at Boyd's trailer at Goodguys Indy last year (02). He paid him 2500 bucks down (about half) and is supposed to pay the rest when the wheels are done. I last talked to him at Louisville (03) and he still hadn't gotten the rims. Boyd kept telling him "Next Month". A lawyer will be stepping in if Boyd doesn't come through. I think that a year wait is a little extreme. I'd be in a hell of a hurry to make 5 grand.

I think Your all just a bunch of fucks with nothing better to do than trash boyd and other older car builders on the internet if you all so pissed at for what he has done for the Hot rod industry why dont you just forget about hot rods in general and go back to about 1976 when hot rods were dying and people like boyd and lil john buttera and the andy brizios built cars that brought life back to hot rods. They may be dated or they may of lacked the certain style of hot rodding but its just like 5 years ago i can remeber everyone thought that the cars from the 60's were gawdy pieces of shit and the 70's cars were disgusting and if it wasent from the 40's or 50's you didnt want anything to do with it now everyone is taking of their kelsey hayes wheels and putting on astos and cragers and radirs . Its the evolution of the sport that were in today that keeps it going in all aspects .

Who gives a shit about a car deal that happend back in the 80's anyhow does it really affect our lives , And when boyd builds a car that he wants to build does it really have anything to do with what you want , Hes not builing it for you hes building it for the customer and thats the way the customer wants it and the way boyd wants it , its his job and thats what he does best . I think if anyone of you could build a car for sombody with clout and get it in a magazine or get it on TV you would jump at the chance no matter what it looked like .

I dont usually look at these post and as you can tell I signed up just to post this . But all i have to say is its all a matter of what your into and as long as you have that thats all that matters. Could you imagine if all the old guys were into 50's and 60's style hot rods it would be a litle harder to find that navarro 2 pot manifold and that set of NOS cal custom valve stam caps .

I am thinking about this more, and you are kind of right why?, if we had better stuff to do we wouldnt be on here talkin about this. But, in about the mid 70's hot rods and street rods around here were popular. And the reason Boyd is not....lets say on my cool guys list, is because he builds cars for customers and stuff to sell them then get reconigtion and advertising to sell more stuff so he can get more money. Well more money for Boyd=more power to him. Well im happy hes rich but im not happy that this is what cars is to him is making money, a lot of people like us take pride in building our cars. And he is ,as far as i know, in it for the money. Now if he truly and deeply loves street rods then i apoligize but it just seems like he uses cars to become rich and famous.

And i just told the story cus i thought it was funny that Kenny didnt care who Boyd was, Kenny, and old farm guy, was just sellin this car to make some money for his future projects. And he wanted cash from him.
