Wiper Motors

Ok, the heater is out of the way (on order) and next on the list is a wiper motor. I don't want to pay $200 for one of those wiper kits like Bob Drake has. THat's too much money. I see Speedway has a stainless motor with a remote swtich for Model A's that's $40. Would that work in a '36 Ford? Any other suggestions? You can get one of those single speed jobs out of a boat or jeep new for $20. The Jeep ones are enclosed and have variable speeds if you go with new CJ or YJ models and run off an actuating arm if you plan on under the cowl mount.

I have 3 of those $40 cheap crap things in use. i guess they are OK. You can hear them whine. I always use RainX. One of the guys on the Rodders Roundtable suggested the wiper out of the back door of a minivan. Inquire at RRT

Wouldn't a newer motor for a minivan have too big a nipple on it for a gennie wiper arm?

The rear wipers are not the same travel as a front one -usually only about 90 degrees instead of the front ones 180degrees......one from a chevy spectrum has the small stud. I tried them- but thats what I discovered.....I prefer a wiper motor from a 70's thru 80's ford or mazda pickup. mount it to the right side of cowl and use a "pitman"arm over to the existing linkage [or home built] stantions if not.

Isn't 90° what I need for top mount though? Is it a compact unit? What is a Spectrum... a minivan?

Try these guys in WA. Kits start at $129 BUT they are designed for each car. Might save you some headache. They are good folks to deal with too.

If it's centrally mounted above the windshield I'd think you'd need more like 120-160 degrees of travel to get good coverage. I'd say the wipers in my Chrysler are about 130 degrees or so, and there's TWO of them.

Also, although the motor probably wouldn't be adaptable (it actually drives a gear at 90 degrees that drives both the wipers), the speed control is an infinitely variable type knob, so if you could find a single-speed motor that went really fast, you could probably make a speed control switch.

Those mighty wipe motors by Pacific western design are pricey- also over the years they have "downedsized the quality" in my opinion.the rear wiper motors mentioned would be better than no wipers- but would park in your line of vision or stop halfway thru their sweep- whichever the case happens to end up......

Hey im running a rear wiper out of a Daihatsu (yeah yeah I know). Its a single speed, but by running a resistor in the 12V power wire and reduing the voltage to it, Ive been aable to turn it into a 2 spd motor.

Its small enuff to fit comfortably in the header panel of my 32 3W.

i used mgb cable drive wiper motor assembly in my 49 gmc.
they work deadly.
2 speeds
adjustable in cable length and wiper sweep... ie. // or /\
simply done by turnig the passenger side tranny upside down.
mgb's are a dime a dozen, worked great for me
