View Full Version : So I've revised my project plans

But I think it's going to work out to be pretty cool. Some of you may remember my intro long ago when I described my '40 Chev pu project. Since then I've been thinking it thru a lot. I was considering selling my '50 chev 5 window pu but now I'm probably just going to sell the body.

The '50 chassis is done and is modded with MII front with disc brakes, rear end is a camaro 10 bolt with sway bars at both ends. It handles quite nicely, though it's not as old-tech as I would prefer. But it is done so it's going under the 40 cab.

For power I've just picked up a nice newly rebuilt 348. It was only run long enough to break the cam in and it's a nice motor. This leaves me with a spare 348 truck motor (not a runner) which I'd trade for a chev 292 inliner if anyone's interested. Not sure about transmission, but maybe a 700r4 or T5. I'd like an overdrive in this one. For the motor I already have a GM aluminum 4 bbl intake and some finned valve covers so those will be on it.

Styling is where I've been having fun dreaming. What I'm planning to do is to mount the cab far enough back on the rails to get the 40 grill to rest just behind the fronts of the front tires with the stock hood in place. I'm planning to run early '30s front fenders with this as well as no hood sides to allow for some lakes style headers, which I'm assuming I will have to fabricate. I may use my factory GM flatbed shortened and narrowed with this too. I'm not planning to chop or section the cab right now but I might try to find an extra cab to practice this on and maybe have 2 cabs for the truck ultimately, a closed cab and an rpu. The fun part is going to be figuring out how to mount these '37 Packard headlights I picked up at Turlock. They are kind of long and I want them to be low down if possible. But they are so cool, they've got to be on the car.

So I'm looking for some early 30s or late 20s front fenders if anyone has some. Pedigree isn't terribly important.

Once this one is up and running I'm thinking I'd like to do an early '30s plymouth 4 door sedan (anybody got one?). I'd put this body on the modified 40 rails with the 216 and my '36 chevy grill shell and 19" wire wheels. No fenders or hood and it will be a seriously low dollar effort. Read Rat! A well engineered and safe hunk of junk if you prefer. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

For you bobber fans, my 101 Scout motor is being built right now too and the frame, tanks and fenders are on their way from New Zealand! I should be able to start work on the chassis next month.

That's about it for now. Take it easy everyone!

Dave

I'd trade you a 292 for the 348, but the drive from MN to CA probably wouldn't make it worth it!

Well, pics could be a while as I've got a foot and a half of snow yet and my workshop is the sideyard. The '50 is under a few feet of frozen snow so I don't even feel like starting work on that. I've got to get the 40 together and get it registered, maybe I'll get that together this winter. But I won't even be able to get to the mock-up stage of this project for at least another couple of months until the weather becomes more conducive to outdoor wrenching.

Hey Nobux, I think that drive would be a little far too. Thanks for the offer though! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
