A few years ago, my friend Jason and I found a 32 tudor with a running flat head for $1500 in Argentina. We were going to fly down there, buy it and drive it home, but then my mom pointed out that we probably wouldn't make it back alive.....

there's a guy named Caplan... I think he's a doctor or something, anyway he lives down there and every now and then he mails me shots of ford woodies and 32-34 coupes etc. the problem is getting them out. The country is in bad shape and everyone (i mean everyone) is a crook down there and it will never get on a boat and if it did, it wouldnt all make it to you. I called a guy in Holland that dealt with Caplan once and said he was a stand up guy but it took almost a year to get his shit out of Argentina.

Now you know it all.

While Herman Zapp **** http://members.shaw.ca/rjsill/zapp.htm *** was staying at my house, he told me that the problem is that the Government of Argentina will not allow cars to leave their country. He did tell me that they allow PARTS to leave, which immediately caused me to think that what could be done is dismantle a car and send it back. Herman knows where a 1925 Federal truck is that hasnt ever been used. He said someone took the wheels off of it when it was new and there it sits with no title. He said it is IMPOSSISLE (heavily emphasized) to get a title when none exists. There are old car clubs in Argentina. They are more active than the Antique clubs in the United States. There is a Model A club there. There is more if you are serious about Argentinan cars. Herman has invited everyone who hosted him and Candelaria to come visit. So, a free place to stay, very friendly hosts who know the Argentina laws and he can speak their language.

Here's his website: Kaplan (http://www.kaplansfamily.com) He has some shipping info and prices, so it looks like it can be done. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

while i have absolutely no experience with Argentina at all... I know antique iron is reasonably easy to come by in Brazil. Ive spent some time there... but even the stuff that appeared to be clean, had some VERY shoddy repair work over the years... lots of odd scrap stuff used to patch body rot, etc.
The prices are awesome, as the US dollar is so much stronger than the brazilian real... but the tough part is getting it back. Ive had a bitchin, running flatty with overhead conversion (factory Simca... brazilian brand with ford flatty, through the 60's) for some time, sitting at my ex's cousins house... cant for the life of me find a way to get it here at any reasonable cost.
As for complete cars, Brazil wont let them out of the country, unless it's a new car, without a fight. "32" fords were actually made there in brazil through something like '38 or '39... was able to find one in reasonable shape, for about $350 US (not running, but complete). Spent about a year trying to find a way to get it here.

ive had some success importing antiques, and other non-automotive stuff, with reasonably low customs cost... and my ex wife does a lot of importing from brazil... so if i can be of any help, let me know.

like i said... i know nothing about Argentina, just trying to throw in some (hopefully) relavent information to the discussion...
