HELP!!

I dunno what happened between this mornin' and this afternoon,,,but this damn thing has gone an turned kinda mauve color,,,,text and background!

It's kinda washed out looking,,,,do I need to kill it humanely with a 3 pound sledgehammer? or is it something I can do to return it to a clean screen with black print again? HRP

Double check your monitor connection on the PC, sometimes if they're coming loose they look funny like you are describing.

I would try a known good monitor next, followed by replacing the video card with one that is also known to be good. Is it weirdly colored during startup or only after windows loads? It sure sounds like a monitor or video card going...

You could also try a different VGA cable (unless it is a CRT with the integrated cable) before swapping out the video card.

The monitor plugs into the video card on the back of the computer. Do you have another monitor to try the computer on?

CRT - cathode ray tube
Heres one with the integrated VGA cable:

On some CRT the cable can be changed.

Here is a LCD(liquid crystal display) screen, that doesn't have an integrated VGA - no VGA is attached in the picture.

VGA - Video Graphics Array - this is the cable that goes from the monitor to the computer and transmits the video signal.

If you were to open the computer case, you'd see a main board (motherboard) with a few cards plugged into it, unless the thing is completely integrated, then you may be stuck like chuck. The card which your monitor plugs into is the video card, though if your computer has an integrated motherboard, the cable will plug directly into the motherboard. Often, there is a way to disable the onboard video and use an aftermarket card in the event that integrated card dies or needs to be upgraded. If you're not a big gamer, which I'm guessing you're not since you'd already have an aftermarket video card if you were, you can get video cards for machines that old for less than $30 and possibly less than $20...
