it's sorta a rocket motor for your car. pretty neat but they hard a hard time getting the tires to hook up back in the day when these were introduced. sure would be fun to have on eon a street car now http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif...

The referenced go-cart was driven by a guy they referred to as Capt. Jack McClure, I saw him run the thing at a 1/8 mile track in NW Florida, totally insane. I also saw the Turbonique powered "Pollution Packer" when it crashed at Gainesville, the driver was extracted in pieces and brought an abrupt end to rocket power on NHRA tracks.

that go cart is fricken NUTS! 2 370 pound thrust rocket motors on the simplest of go cart frames. no seat belt, no roll bar and 150 mph in 4 seconds!!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif no that is fuckin CRAZY!!!!

Here's your chance to build one http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3170427295&category=25 67
But in the current paranoia I doubt you can buy rocket fuel, have to turn up the O2 a little and run something else. Hot Rod glossed over the mail fraud charge that closed the doors, but the rumor mill had it the gov't didsn't want someone selling rocket motors to the public.

Anyone remember the Volkswagon Beetle they ran on the strip? Ran some ridiculous MPH like 180 or something. They finaly wadded it up like a piece of paper due to the bug's aerodynamics. They ran the wadded up bug in their ads too. Scary but funny.

Here is some more hearsay and speculation...
A guy at work grew up in Orlando a not too far from this guys summer home. My buddy says he used to see him all the time then kinda all of a sudden, he didn't.
The summer home stood vacant for many years..and may still be..The property sits on a still undeveloped area outside of Orlando.
My buddy even peeked inside the abandon car hauler that had been left on the property. Said it was full of housings, impeller wheels and the such.(it was 1977 at the time..)
The only other info was: This fella had a contract with the Government for the production of this stuff, but was selling them to the public also. A BIIIG no-no. The result was the end of the company and a prison sentence for the owner. To be fair, my buddy did not know if the prison sentence was for the Government contract or somthing else...
Hell of an intresting story..
PS. The rest of Hot Rod is good too. The altered wheelbase shootout was killer.
