EdMurder is working on an old Chevy coupe. He's still in the early stages, but plowing ahead despite all our jeers. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks guys anyone else have any? What are the main differences between building a early chevy vs ford?
I read somewhere that the truck cabs were tacked to a wood frame.Does this go for the cars as well? What do people do to remedy this prob?Build steel frame?

I think the main difference is that no one build early Chevy hot rods. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The bodies actually share a lot of similarities, and all early cars have some wood inside.

One of the major differences is that Chevy used parallel leaf springs, so it's a little cumbersome on a hot rod, but if you build a roadster, it would look good as an early lakes roadster or Indy-inspired car.

Chevies had a ton of wood inside, including the doors, not just a little. That's why you don't see very many - they rotted. You've got quite a bit of work to do to support all that metal unless you find one with decent wood. It's true not many were built into rods. But Cole's looks fine! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here's a 35 Master Deluxe 5W coupe that I bought from redbeard a coupla months ago. 1935 is the last year of the "wood cars". When I finish my Merc and get around to this project I intend to fabricate new internal structures out of steel instead of replacing the wood with more wood....

Here's the '31 RPU I plan to build. I have all the major parts, just need time and a warm place to work this winter. Engine is a 292 C.I. six-banger with an Offy three-singles manifold and Mallory dual-point ignition. Front axle will be straight, with torsion suspension instead of the buggy spring shown. "54 Chevy spindles with vintage Hurst/Airhart spot brakes. Corvair steering box. Saginaw 4 speed, aluminum flywheel, Ansen cast steel scattersheild, etc. Rear end is a '65 Pontiac posi.

P.S. I'll be damned surprised if this pic comes through.

Wow! I'm amazed that pic worked. Here's the front and rear views.

BTW - '30-'31 Chevy headlight buckets and '48 Chevy taillights.

Nice rods guys.I have a question regarding chevy chassis and suspension. How was it setup and does anyone have any pics of it?

Yeah, let me second Stone, anybody got some detail shots of Lukester's front end/spring mount set-up? I really like that grille placement; behind the front axle, but covering the suicide mount. Nicely done.

FeO2, stan292, dig your projects, guys!

Stone,

I'm in the middle of screwing up a '31 Chevy 5W coupe. Unfortunately it's been a while since I've taken any progress pictures, but if you search under my name you'll come up with a few old updates.

As far as your suspension questions go, I have a billion pictures of my setup. They're all at home though. Is there anything you're looking for in particular? Don't listen to the people who tell you that parallel leaf suspensions are ugly. They have no idea. Form follows function.

Thanks edmurder.I'm new to this and trying to learn as much as I can.I have seen pics of 32 ford rails and other ford chassis.I was wondering how the setup differs.I would like to be able to see pics of the chevy setups to grasp the full content.

THOM has a '28 chevy roadster project that he wants to sell.

If I was to build a chevy hot rod, I would ditch the front end and use Ford stuff. It looks waaaay better.

Thanks guys. How much of a sin would it be to build a tube chassis or modify a frame from something else?

Jimmy B
06-15-2004, 08:59 PM
Here is my chassis it's a '29 but is very similar to '32.

At Wintersun this past weekend there was a '32 Chev roadster that had parallel leaf spring front with lever action shocks, front brakes looked to be Ford brakes (5 stud) with finned Buick drums flathead V8, quickchange rear with same brake combo as front, unsplit wishbones. Also had a Duvall style windshield. Sorry no pics yet as I'll have to get around to get the pics developed (f*ck I need to buy digi camera http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif).
