First, let me say W O W! Although I've listened to his CD's & bootleg country for a while now, I've never seen III in concert. He rocked. Hard. Real hard.
He opened w/ a set of country and slowly transitioned into what he calls Hellbilly. That shit rocked! I hadn't heard it on CD before and it was amazing. Think Hank I hopped up on a bunch of cocaine w/ hard drivin' guitar. That was the tempo.
Some observations
-He's the best damn thing to happen to country in 25 yrs., and no one knows it! This is due to him playing low down, dirty, real twangin' country music that the masses just don't understand. To hell with Tobey Keith and his likes.
-He seems to be a cool guy. He pays respect where respect is due and he likes his fans. And let me tell ya', III's fans are a rough and tumble bunch. I saw everything from pompadours to mohawks. The gray haired crowd was well represented as well. And I'm talkin' real gray...like 60-80 gray. That's just rad! Folks of all types were stompin' hard and singing along.
-The sum' bitch ought to eat something. I kid you not, he's gotta' weigh no more than 150 lbs. at like 6'3. Skinny like a 2 x 4 stood on end.
-He can drink and he can smoke. The magazines ain't lyin' about that folks. Over the course of 1.5 hrs. of country, III probably worked his way through a 5th of whiskey, 3-4 beers, a joint, and God knows what else. And this was before he even got into his second set! Furthermore, I can't even imagine what he drank/smoked/snorted before the show or at the 15 minute break between sets.
If he comes to your town go see him. Make it a point. This guy is what music should be about. Music. No stupid Pepsi sponsorships, no hosting TRL, no bubble gum pop. Just hard drivin' country and punk.
