Since my oven is warmed up already, if this calendar auction hits $100, a HUGE batch of chocolate chip cookies goes to the wiener. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ok... I am a little lost, and either this post will not make it, or I will be really outcasted... But, I need to speak my mind. I host and run six websites. I know the cost. And I just got my new Garage magazine with a full page color ad for the HAMB. Now the HAMB does not want to be on TV but it wants to advertise in magazines???? Maybe the ad was free, but anyhow. I know understand what costs so much money. Can we see a list of expenses, if so I would be alot more apt to donate...

I'd be surprised if the Garage ad was a paid ad, and not simply a nice gesture on the part of the Garage people (several of whom are HAMBers).

Running a website takes on a whole new dimension when it has the daily traffic and interaction that this one does. Monthly server charges add up quickly, especially when you don't charge money or accept advertising on the site.

As for an accounting of costs, Ryan doesn't ask for money--people simply give him donations to help defray the cost of the site. Why should he make his numbers public when he's not even asking for anything?

Regardless, this is an auction post. I hope it doesn't turn into a debate.

I can't believe you had the fucking nerve to type a request like this. It's certainly not any of your business, nor anyones for that matter, what this place costs to run. If you don't feel the urge to "donate", then don't. The doors won't close here cuz you don't anti in your pocket change.

I was referring to the cost of owning one, not content. I never claimed to be a web genius. As one has state before bandwith become expensive with content such as this. So I will apoligise for wasting it and regress. Enjoy your Hot Rods... They love bandwith also..!!!!

Which is exactly why we have the auctions. If you disagree with the way we do things around here, bye bye.
Denise, do you really have a "warmed oven"?

Rad. Biting my lip on the expenses thing. Biting real hard! But an understandable question if you don't host a website that is as bandwidth intensive as the HAMB. I've never released expenses for the HAMB as I've never felt it was anyone's business. The HAMB made money for the first time in '03... We made exactly $633!!! I guess that's not really "profit" when you consider the 20 or so hours a week I spend maintaining the HAMB, but it sure beats paying out the ass! You have no idea what a relief that was to me as I've been footing the bill for 9 years now.

As for Garage Magazine, I did the logo for the magazine and in return Stoner placed a full page add for me... Both him and Perry are good friends of mine. As for TLC, I think people are under the impression I rejected them cuz we were too cool... That might have had something to do with it, but bottom line - I didn't want to pay the server bills after the show!

I don't think a simple expense question should get a guy run. He was curious and he asked - nothing wrong with that in my opinion. I'm sure to someone that doesn't have a real grasp on hosting prices and bandwidth usage it might seem like I am making out like a bandit... Sometimes I wish I was, but I ain't...

Just to put things in perspective:

20 hours/week X 52 weeks/year = 1,040 hours/year. $633 profit/year divided by 1,040 hours/year = $0.61/hour

I guess that's OK. But if you start making more than 70 cents an hour people are gonna be real pissed off around here! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Ok, I know how much the calendar profit should have been and you still only came out $600 ahead? For all the hard work and huge time I put into the calendar, I enjoyed it. Even better for me is how stoked everyone is about it. I'm proud of the finished product. And I've learned a thing to two. Maybe in a couple months we'll try it again.

For some reason I feel really defensive about this... I think a lot of guys that run these little personal or small business sites don't really understand the concept bandwidth. As an example, at work we run BK.com and it pulls 275 gig of bandwidth a month...

The HAMB averages 350 gig a month. Go out and price a dedicated hosting platform for that kind of bandwidth with a decent processor, good memory, and that supports: InterDev, ASP, Perl (for the mail to), ODBC, SSL, PHP, mysql, etc... I'll bet my monthly server charges are double or triple what the average HAMB guy spends on his project a month. It's not cheap to have a server as consistent and as reliable as what we have with the kind of traffic we have... Neilson rates my domain as a top 100 domain in the world - the only other private named and owned server on that list is a tech geek that runs gizmodo.com.

The three big money makers were Racefab (HAMBdrags didn't make money, the raffle did...lots of it), JimC, and the Calendars. I would guess that those three things alone paid for 5 or 6 months of the server.

Money is money. It's not something I worry too much about especially now that people are being so generous with auctions and what not. I will never bitch about it and I will never ask for it. If I have to, I will foot the bill for this place all alone and consider it an investment. That's fine.

The only negatives in my life regarding the HAMB is the babysitting part. It gets very discouraging to work as hard as I do and put so much of yourself into something only to see people take it so lightly and selfishly by turning the board into playgrounds for their low self esteem in real life. I fucking HATE that. But, I think our new tech week (and other online special events coming later) will more than make up for it...

The point to all of this is that I'm not making money and I'm not loosing it. People should not feel pressured in any way, shape, or form to hold auctions or to bid on them for the HAMB. The HAMB isn't about money and it's free for your enjoyment.

I personaly know how mutch these boards go for... I have not figured about bandwith or other fee's so im sure its insanely high.
Along time ago, i had to make a website for a guy, he wanted a message board, and of course the UBB threads are the best, i did the info, and once he heard how much they went for, and the website, he split and i never herd from him again......

I think HAMB is a great place, its an expensive place but we all benifit from this place....

thanks ryan-

Ryan, I hope you weren't getting defensive over what I wrote too. After I reread that, it sounds like I was getting down on your costs. Not at all. I was just hoping the calendar would make more of a dent in the cost of the HAMB. After all that work, that is kinda discouraging. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Ryan,

I had NO idea how much it cost to run a site like the HAMB, and I'm sure most of its subscribers here didn't either. I've wondered the same thing as Thom many times. I think what you've written in this post explains a lot. I never thought you were raking in the dough, but I did think all your HAMB expenses were covered. I think it's great that you don't ask for money (and that you artfully dodged the cost question here), but maybe an explanation (like what you gave above) is necessary every now and then to remind us and inform new subscribers why HAMB auction come up all the time... and why we need more of them.

I appreciate what Ryan is saying. That is why I did the auction, to help him out. Those of us that hang out here and use the services and bandwidth realize what a great place this is. <font color="blue"> I want to help raise money </font> so I can continue to enjoy this place.

So back to the auction, looks like Draglinks at $75 is the top bidder right now. Thanks to all that have bid!

I really don't care how much it costs Ryan to run this place. I worked on the calendar (and I think Chad did too) because we wanted to help out with the finances and have something to show for it in the end. And I'm happy to buy things from the auctions and I'm happy to auction things off too. I do cause I want to. This is the best fucking car thing anywhere ..... period and I want to help sustain it. I get a lot more "useless" car knowledge and enjoyment and meet more cool people than any other way I know. I think we all do or we wouldn't hang out here. Bottom line..... Ryan runs the kind of place I want to support and the auctions give me a way to give back.
