Those guys in Tulsa always seem to have moonshine
around, and they drive hot rods.

Are you writing the book about THEM??

THEM Tulsa that is.

I found this forum by accident and thought it would help with my research on the mountain moonshiners and how they suped up their hot rods to deliver shine.

Have you seen the movie "Thunder Road" with Robert Mitchum (1958)? It would give you an idea what these guys did to their cars. Big cubic inch motors in a light car, or a modified engine in the same car, many ways to achieve the similar result.

No I haven't...I hear it is a good movie. I would have to order it here where I live since it is such a small town we have no circuit city and so on. I will try to find it though. I wouldnt know what kind of car I'm looking at if I seen it though.

For a review, check out: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052293/

ATF agent Charles H Weems wrote 2 good books.Lots of other were written too. Next fall you should check out the moonshine festival in dawsonville Ga. several working stills ,lots of trip cars, some old still workers, many books being sold. My favorite was a caracter named Pop Corn Sutton. He made the best I have ever looked at.... good luck on your book...

there is a museum in Southwest VA based on the hot rodding days of the 50's and 60's in SW VA. I don't remember where I saw the ad for it or the name of it, maybe someone knows it. I'm in Northern VA.

Perhaps you'll have better luck on the main board. Something like "Any moonshine running stories???"

I used to build cars for an older man who had a friend who ran moonshine when they were in high school in Tennessee. He never knew who he was running the "shine" for. He was just given instructions to drive said vehicle to said location. Drop it off, go do something (usually go play pool) for 2 or 3 hours. The fella would then come back to the drop off, pick up the car and drive it back the original location. It always had a huge bag of money waiting for him in the seat.

The funny thing is the car was a real "lowrider" on the way, but sat really high in the air on the way back. The moonshine was in a tank that consumed the whole backseat and trunk area of a 38 Ford.

The man went on to say, his friend never "knew" he was running moonshine. But he knew the job paid really well and didn't ask any questions.

I hope that helps.

Hey Tyler, just cuz Sexton and Phil are expert "corn whiskey" drinkers don't mean we all have access to the Still.

Welcome to the HAMB, the book sounds like a fun project. I've always had one question to ask about moonshine running, why did they have to speed? Did anyone run the stuff in a fuel or gas trucks or some other slow moving vehicle? One of the most sucessful booze runners in New York Ciry delivered the stuff in electric powered trucks in the 1920's. This should get moved to the main board for more exposure. Good luck with your book!
