Hello, to everyone on the HAMB.
I have been watching from the shadows long enough! Seems there are many others out there, that have the same sickness I have had, most of my life, a strong over whelming attraction to things that have wheels, are way to loud and scream HEY LOOK AT ME! when it comes by at 100 m.p.h.
As for me, I have a great family, wife of 26 years and three great kids, 23-20-and 12 years of age.I say great kids because today I have had my phone off all day and they cant reach me! Just kidding--KIDS-- you gotta love"m.
I have worked most of my life as a toolmaker, I had a four year try at running a auto parts salvage yard that I had to give up due to lack of bread---just like the Greatful Dead.
I cant remember the first time I was stricken with "THE ILLNESS" but I do know it was at a very young age and I guess theres no cure in site.Learned what little I know about cars from being the youngest of eight kids and it seemed due to my older brothers.we always had plenty of junk cars with blown motors ect. at our disposal. My first real car was a 56 chevy two door, with a 235 six and a POWERSLIDE trans, I built a pickup bed trailer and traded for it even up.It smoked so bad, you filled up the oil and checked the gas.But I was cruzin man.I currently have a 60 Ford x-4 door now a two door starliner, thus the scarliner thing. 460--4 speed-- rough but very fun--love it.
Well to make a long story shorter I have had a bunch of cars
through the years, none I can say were show stoppers, but man have I had some fun and met some great people. The perfect example of this was attending THE HAMB DRAGS I dont know how I was chosen to be one of the lucky ones, just dumb luck I was talked into going and I almost didnt---BAD CAR GUY---but I did go and it was a BLAST! I have attended many car shows, trophy debates, blaw blaw blaw, but this thing was nothing like I had been to before.Everyone there had a Lets have fun attitude and it was about friends who had never met before, face to face, and yet you felt you had known them for life!
As for me being an outsider to the HAMB, where else in the world could you, meet people from all over the U.S.A.--- and even Australia, that had the same love of cars as you do.I saw the great RAMBLER grudge race, HAMB DIGGER AND the HAMB DIGGER KILLER race and bikes racing and all I saw were folks having a great time.I even got to race my car several times, never been on the track side before screwed up plenty, but hey I had fun.Plan on building something faster for next time.
And I have to admire the long haulers, two guys and thier crews that came from California, to put on a show for all of us.That was no small task to do what these guys did.A GREAT JOB goes out to both of you.As far as I am concerned we were all winners that weekend!
I know there we plenty of other long haulers Alabama--Wiscosin--Michigan--Penn. and the list goes on, My hats off to all of you, you know who you are.
Also we were in a Mc Donalds parking lot at 12:00 a.m. after a long day of B.S.ing on friday and up drives a fellow who has driven several hours to deliver "THE PIG
" so we could all eat the next day and the next day was about a 100 degrees and here stands several people sweat'n over a huge fire for hours just to serve us.A BIG THANK YOU to those guys.
Looking forward to the next HAMB DRAGS I will be there!
Well hope to meet plenty of you guys and gals on the HAMB ,feel I know several of you just from lurking so long.Thanks-Scarliner
