Just got home from the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona. It was a good show, with most being ones that I have never seen in person. I took 400 pics but it will take time to get some of them on my site. Thought I would share the candidates for the Most Beautiful Roadster

i'm going to go out on a limb and say #7... i think you can look PAST wheel choice and look at the entire car. #3 doesn't do anything for me at all...
Were they all told the couldn't spend more than $339.95 on their displays?
They all look so...Utilitarian!
Where's the turntables and soft music and dancing girls? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
#6 should win.....It would be just as lame as it was last year.

PS ...I wish I had the money that was put into just one of those cars. I could build a house and a couple of cars to boot.

The winner should be the red Austin Healy. ain't no reason to ever go to that show again. Talk about medeoker. None of those cars contending were "beutifull" Maybee underthought and over painted is a better title. And thats supposed to be a level to aspire to? I havn't wasted that much money going to a show ever.....................

AlaKart
They judge them on how friggin clean they are, white gloves thing like at a Concourse so the car that's been kept in a GERMetically sealed container the most will win.
Read that in one of them magazine articles on how to win the big one.
Or the most popular Name$ with the judge$ maybe...Naw, those judges are totally impartial! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
That aluminum bubble on the side of the So.Cal car reminds me of a goose egg on kids forehead...but the rest is, well only typical of their cars..

i really like the color on #5.
#6 makes me want to throw up.
They are all pristine and polished and perfect, which is ok, but no trailer-queen will ever get my vote.
I appreciate all the work that went into them, but if you have to put mirrors under your car to show off how much money you invested, then its just not hotrodding to me, and its not fun. I wont even look.
I wish theyd have the companies that worked on the car listed at the shows, and the actual talented people that made the car into what it is, give the real artists some credit, not just the owner.
I think that there are two kinds of people at cruise-ins, rod runs and show n' shines. the ones that built them, and the ones that bought them.
Thats definatly just my own personal opinion. I'm not trying to get personal or knock anyone that owns or knows people that own cars like these. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Out of these cars, I'd choose #3 for myself, but it's completely traditional -- except for the hood blisters, there's nothing on that car that we haven't seen a hundred times. I think the AMBR should go to a car that's in some way fresh and innovative.
The type of car exemplified by #6 and #7 -- stylizations, or caricatures, of traditional Ford shapes by Chip Foose or another skilled designer, seem to me closer to the spirit of the AMBR, but we've already seen it done with the '32, '34 and '35 body styles in the last several years' winners. I'd pick #7 for the award, which purports to be a '36, because it really is good looking and we haven't seen that particular thing done before. It looks to me like a '34 dressed up in a '36 costume, but it's still the most novel and the best looking of the "designed" cars.

DrJ I do think that was all of the serious candidates (there were other roadsters but none with 40x40 displays)..I think this years candidates were the most normal cars in years. The red 36 chevy is a really nice car with some heavy mods when you compare it to a stock 36.. The yellow Boydster 2+ as they called it looked so much like a belly button I had a hard time taking a picture of it. but I did try to take pics of almost everything regardless if I liked it or not. The green roadster reminded me of the one done a year or so ago that had the 1 of 10 steel (Krugul?) bodies. If was not the same car from what I can tell. The other black roadster was nice but just seemed to be missing something. It also appeared that most of these cars were built to eventually hit the road, almost all had painted under carriages with lack of one off billet or heavy use of chrome... The cars were nice but nothing over the top with the exception of the red 36. One of my favoite cars was a blue 40 vert and a 29 sedan. I did notice alot of flat screen video systems in the displays with "How the car was built" presentations. There was a 37 Ford with a Zephyer roof and lots of other mods designed by Foose that had a bigger display monitor then I have in my house and a very nicely done (As in professional) presentation. I will post more pics later but here is another of #3 since it seems to be popular. Here is a nice shot of the Ardun

Amazing collection of car$, but a$ with women, 'beautiful' doe$ not nece$$arily mean 'attractive'.
As an exerci$e in 'who can $pend the mo$t money on a car' that competition i$ getting pretty impre$$ive http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.
As always, I vote for Doane Spencerīs 32. But I guess it was not a contender or even there...
Thanks for reminding me Why I am so bored with street rods.

.......I went to the Baltimore World of Wheels show yesterday and didn't take a single photo. Lots of nice vehicles, but no HOT RODS!! There are usually a couple. Got home last night and was discussing this with my wife and she agreed. She said, "There are a lot of cool Hot Rods out there, how come there weren't any in the show?" I told her that I felt that like this place, it isn't about the show/poser attitude if you are "real." The REAL Hot Rodders of today are out in the streets, in the garages and on the Flats and dry lakes.
#3 for America's Most Beautiful HOT ROD and #7 for America's Most Beautiful Street Rod....there IS a difference! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

this was the best roadster there. The So-Cal car was very nice but they all kinda look the same to me. Plus, t-shirt shops just shouldnt build cars. All the rest look "MTV Cribs" to me. Even D'Agostino's new Packard (super nice custom) looked like P ditty should be driving it.

Dagastino's Packard isn't eligible??? At least it isn't another plastic 32....and it has great lines (when the top is off)
Is that the "Gable" Packard or the pink Packard? Havent seen finished Photos of "Gable" yet. If its that one, anyone out there with photos+ (in the works photos can be seen at JDīs own site).

01-25-2004, 01:56 PM
I'm sorry, was that most beautiful? or most expensive? Proves once again that money does not buy good taste.
The interior on that Ardun roadster is fuckin' AWFUL (the rest of that car is damn nice though). Every other car there falls somewhere between fugly and just plain boring. They look like snap together models, especially that one with the shiny hard plastic tires. The one that gooch posted is about the nicest car.
Those cars are nouvelle cuisine... get me to a steak house.

#4 sucks, but I bet it wins. Origional thought and big names win the AMBR. The rest have all been done before.
#3 might have won in 55, but it doesn't stand a chance today. AMBR should probably go to one of the Mustang GT convertables with monster stereo's and multiple TV viewers in the other building...
Glad I stayed home.
Woulda been nice to see the Ala Kart again tho...

That was the really wierd thing. I went on Saturday and saw maybe five rods and customs in the lot- including mine- it was a sea of SUV's (the opposite of a hot rod basically). If these people like custom cars enough to pay $15 to get in the door why don't the drive one? I guess I am moree of a swap meet guy than a car show guy afterall.

number 5 does it for me that resembles a lot what I am building I just love the exhausts running down the side instead of the common practice of trying to hide them underneath
It just screams hotrod
I am constantly amazed by people trying to make subtle rods ?Could anything be as in your face as a hot rod ?
According to the Street Rodder coverage, #4 won.

Funny that so many of you voted for the Ala Cart and it isn't the Ala Cart but it wasn't there. The Clone Cart was though. I have to admit it fooled a lot of people.
There were a lot of really traditional rods and customs there with a lot of history. I went Friday night and Saturday and I thought it was a pretty good show. No where as good as the 50th (or the 50th Cobo show either). The local old timers were very happy to have a decent winter indoor show again. Several told me there hasn't been a good indoor show in the LA area for over 15 years. Never been here before so I'll have to take their word for it.
Between the show and the Peterson we saw about 14 former winners which was neat.
Got 4-600 pics to go through. Running around the town tomorrow and then back to the wonderful NE weather:(
Dennis
JADED, is all that comes to mind when reading alot of these posts. Did you guys expect anything different from what was at the show? You know "street rods" will be in the majority at a deal like this.
I'm just a simpleton from Phoenix too stupid to know how bad the show really was.
To you truly "gifted" builders out there, don't worry about the same old StreetRod Trends and the accolades those builders and owners seem to get year after year. Build your shit for those who matter, yourself, friends and peers.
Let the bitching resume....

At least they're all roadsterish--I was just looking through a book on AMBR history, and there was a horrible period of things that resemble dune buggys and random assemblages of Hot Wheels parts.

Did anyone see that '37 that was called a 1939 ford roadster? I forgot to take a pic, It bug the shit out of me that is wasn't even remotely a 39 ford.
Boones
01-26-2004, 04:48 PM
I probably have a pic of the 39 that was called a 37.. take a look at my link to all my pics. I tried to get a pic of every car whether I like it or not just for history reference...
#4 was nice but seems to lack something.. I think it was the interior that I disliked the most, the choice of wood was not my fav.
I have to agree with Jeem's comments above, thou the cars are not this sites preference, the quality of work and the ideas that can be taken from most of the cars is exceptional..
Number 3 is my idea of a Deuce, black, traditional, simple and well maintained, well, too maintained so it probably rarely hits the streets.
My opinion(s)
The color sceme is metrosexual. I wouldn't be surprised to see it on a car driven by Richard Simmons in West Hollyweird any more than being driven by a blue hair in Newport Beach, but I would be surprised to see a HAMBer driving it.
The interior looks like it was taken out of a Lexus (which ain't bad) and squished into the roadster.
The angle of the column drop really really bothers me. It should be at the same angle as the console part of the dash.
The trunk cut line is really neat the way it opens at the seat but they should have pancaked the hood and cut it the same way... It's called continuity of design.
The headlights are ugly blobs and the novelty of using new car lights in pods on rods got old half way through the first year of Dodge Neons. The headlights and tail lights should have been treated the same, either both tunneled or both "floating" in "pods".
I guess it had the cleanest chassis of the bunch and no fluids, oil, or grease has ever been put in it.
That's what it takes to win. What it actually looks like is just one item on the long list of "Is this clean? Is that clean?
