I've attended a few of them. Its good fun drinking beer and walking around picture perfect cars. Some interesting stuff there quite often.

Anyone saying you can't get a car there at a decent price must be looking at cars that fetch high value. Of course a 100k car is going to sell for 100k. What do you expect?

I saw plenty of deals at the last one I was at, and wished I had the funds to jump on them. If there is ever one in your town GO its fun. It cost me $7. Heineken's were $6

If that costs too much you're in the wrong hobby regardless of what you build.

Last time I went it cost $20 or $25 to walk in the door. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif but I didn't travel over 2,000 miles to stand on the other side of the fence so I paid it. Food was on the expensive side I thought.

I did have a great time checking out the cars and the "beautiful" people in their slacks, cashmere sweaters, dresses and fancy hats.

Framedragger, make sure you wear your black E&J t-shirt so I can spot you in the crowd on TV. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I'll be watching all three nites I'm sure.

From what I'm hearing it is about $15- $25 to get in the door. The last event (Goodguys) at this venue in Scottsdale was charging like $12 for a burger, fries, and a drink.
So, in Scooter's defense, for him, his wife and daughter to attend, it will cost him a minimum of $50.

(30 seconds later)
"Wait, we're now being told that the color is not Plum Crazy it is Panther Pink."
(5 mins later)
"We just got an email confirming that the color is actually called Panther Pink."

Did anyone else see the nice looking 54 Mercury that went for about 12grand? They made a HUGE deal about some scratches on the bumper and I could have sworn Alain De Cadenet was trying to give the car a "slumming it" feel calling it a "project."
He'd shit his knickers if he saw MY '55!

That 4-door '35 Ford cabriolet would be cool...looked pretty stock, but all the eddie meyer goodies under the hood...cool!

I wasn't paying much attention, but I think one of the guys said something about the flathead in a nice blue '50 ford convertible being incorrect? they started talking about Y-blocks...? I think they mixed something up.

A lot of nice cars and a lot more to come.

they need one more person on stage, one that acually knows american cars. they kept saying that the 63 split window would have brought more money if it would have had the bigger engine option. well there weren't any bigger enigines in 63. and they created an entire new catogory, the "resto mod". same stuff as last year really.

I about shit when that 34 Chevy Ton and 1/2 brought $38,000!

I thought that is where 2 idiots met.

I was out in the garage working on mine at the time and said (to the spacetruck) "I bet your brother is real proud of himself now, but you'll be cooler!"

I was kinda wishing that I hadn't converted mine into the spacetruck. All my truck needed was some new paint and a shiny bed and it would have been just as nice. I gave 2,500 for mine. For that kind of money I could have made enough to buy that 36 3 window I have always wanted!

I got so ticked watching the morons with their senseless babbling that I emailed them and suggested it would be nice with all the hot rods there if they could have someone that knows something about them as an announcer in the booth. They said a steel 37 with a flathead like the Minotti one would be worth more. Since they never made a steel 3 window maybe they were rite. The comment about the stock 50 rag with the Y-block was good to. I thought the British guy knew more about American cars than that moron Brock Yates. Is he really that stupid. Prices were really down this year. Incorrect cars were a bargain. Nutz

36 Couper, that series is called "Victory by Design" and it really does kick ass. It is one of the few shows that Speed has on (sunday evenings) that is worth watching.

I accused Alain De Cadenet of making the remark above about that nice looking 54 Mercury being a "project." I caught it again last night and it was, in fact, one of the other idiots. Then the assholes continued to make remarks about how the car was not really worth that much because a restorer would have "alot of work to do to it" but for now it was a "good driver."
Hey douchebag, what was the car built for 50 years ago? I just bet the boys at Mercury may have actually intended for that particular car to be driven.
When the auction was over, they make the remark that "oh well, it's for a good cause."
SHIT, they made this thing out to be Charlie Brown's Christmas Tree, and it was a really nice car!

I happen to watch Victory by Design, that guy is good on there. But, he is out of his league with American cars. Brock Yates? For a guy that just had 2 cars in Street Rodder, you would think he was a little sharper. What they are showing is entertainment, which we have to take with a grain of salt. Since they are aiming their demo at cae guys however, I feel that our constuctive criticism is waranted.

As for some of those buyers, many folks HIRE a nondescript guy to buy for them. There are even "cartels" that buy for wealthy clients that dont have the time nor desire to mingle with the masses. Think sheiks, movie stars, dictators etc.........

Speaking of pompous, the worst guy is the head guy, whatever his name is--he is either Barrett or Jackson. I can't remember. Seeing him jump up and down when the bidding gets hot makes me sick. That fucker is making money on both ends; buyer and seller. If he was at all humble, he would sit there and enjoy the show and not look like a greedy bastards when he claps.

Here's a little blurb on the British/French guy....

"Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alain De Cadenet - Bio
Birthplace: London
Residence: England/France

Alain de Cadenet made his reputation building and driving his own sports racing cars, taking-on the full "works" factory teams and, at times, even beating them. In 1976 he came third overall at Le Mans, which made his mark and in 1980, won two rounds of the World Sports Car Championship (Monza 1000k and Silverstone 6-Hours). At that time, this was considered a major achievement in an era of increasing professionalism, when it was unheard of for a self-funded privateer to take-on the "big boys" and win.

Alain is also one of the most respected and accomplished racers of classic and vintage cars and, during the course of his driving career, has owned and raced some truly important machines, particular in the marque of Alfa Romeo. Now, during the course of shooting six "Victory by Design" shows, it's probably safe to say that Alain has driven more different and important racing cars than any person in history.

In addition to his passion for cars, Alain is also an avid collector of motor cycles and airplanes (including a WW2 Spitfire). For many years he was also a collector and authority on George V stamps, even advising the British Postal Service on their collection. Alain's knowledge of vintage wines and period stills cameras is also formidable. He is genuinely a 21st century "renaissance man".

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------"

Mom...can I be him when I grow up? PLEASE!

Alain is rightfully OUT of our league...and it doesn't bother me to say that! I think it's below him to even be on the "floor" at the auction.

...So there I was, doing "my part" and watching their commercials but when they came back I had to let loose a loud stream of profanity. They showed the last few seconds of an auction and were rolling away with one of the most beautiful deuce roadsters I have ever seen! I was pissed that we didn't get to hear the full "9-yards" on this sweet piece of machinery.

They did mention that it was a 32 with hand fabricated body panels (The boattail was dead give away that this thing was not exactly stock ). Lookin' up the details at the Barrett Jackson web site revealed that this roadster is motivated by a 296 cid Flattie with an Ardun conversion! Hotttttttt.

These guys are out of control. Can you believe over $100K for a green, yes green duece roadster that was NOT an historic hot rod? You could have made that car for $50K! How about over $200K for a Shelby Mustang GT500 w/ an automatic? How about the goofy red '49 Dodge 1 1/2 ton stepside that the owner/seller had poured buckets of dollars on going for over $40K? However, it is addictive & I sure wish I had more money than brains.

Mike Zenor
01-25-2004, 11:51 AM
The price bid on that green deuce roadster was fucking insane. $110,000+ for a run-of-the-mill late '80s deuce rod - with a SBC, tweed interior and tilt/telescopic? You can buy that car all day at traderonline.com for $30-$40k.

Then, an hour later an Ardun deuce roadster goes for $95k. Still a stupid price, but the morons in that crowd were willing to pay $15k more for a fucking small block?!

Another thing - didja notice that sectioned blue shoebox? Sorta like Billy Gibbons'. I think that went for around $140k or something, buyer was Skip Barber.

By the way, the announcers didn't notice it but the guy who bought the Shelby GT500 was Ted Waitt of Gateway Computer fame.

I went to the auction yesterday. It's just a big car show to me.

I was able to kick the tires on Bob Harrop's 1961 Pontiac "Super Duty" Catalina. That was worth the $25 price of admission right there.

Intresting fact about this years auction. This year there is a larger than normal amount of European buyers. The American dollar has fallen in value so much, that the prices that the Europeans are picking up the cars at, in most cases, are realative bargains with the exchange rate. Hot Rods have become very popular overseas, and even at the prices that they are going for, they will probably make a profit abroad.

If that is the car I'm thinking of(haven't had a chance to watch tv today) it's a Spokane car.

Reminds me of a short story in AutoWeek once by Keith Martin who does all of the auction stuff for them.A prime example of,"Auction Fever"or,"I can piss farther than you can 'cause I've got a bigger.."you know the rest.
Anyway up for grabs was a pristine 57 Fuelie 'Vette that at the time was going for around 35 to 50K.These two imbeciles with more money than sense got into it and bid the thing up to 260K! and that didn't include the buyer's premium!
The ironic thing(that Martin mentioned in closing)was that the loser of the bidding war could take some consolation in knowing that if he wanted to,he could go out and buy about FIVE Fuelie 'Vettes for the same price and STILL have enough to register and insure them all!
Whatever the result it's a lose-lose situation.

I sure am glad that I am not he only one to think that the majority of the commentators on this show are a bunch of f#*king idiots! My wife can't understand why I just about come unglued when I hear their senseless drivel. Especially Brock Yates. What a moron-no, make that a f#*king moron. I have met him on several occassions as he lives just down the road from my home in upstate NY and it would be hard to imagine anyone else that is as impressed with himself as is old Brock. A real horses ass. Alain De Cadenet may well be an expert on things European but, he don't know shit about our good old USofA cars so why does he keep jabbering on as if he does. The two of these guys really give me heartburn. Notwithstanding my complaints with the commentators, it was satisfying in an unusual way to see a "hot rod" draw the top price for the auction. I bet that really pissed off more than a few of the restorers and Europe-is-best f*#kwads. Kinda made my day.
