My first tech post and I'm giddy like a little girl! OK, it's not even really tech, but what the hell, it's informative.

I've found that EvapoRust works great for completely removing rust from smaller parts. It's environmentally safe, and won't hurt metal or paint. It's a little expensive, but well worth it.

you'd like an example? Sure! Here's an old bike horn I found in a junkyard

here's the same horn after 30 minutes in EvapoRust (http://www.orisonmarketing.com/corrosion/evaporust/evapo-rust.html)

Its awesome stuff, found it a while back..I became a dealer for them after I used it. can be used for large areas if you place a sponge soaked in it on the item and cover the sponge with suran wrap to keep the solution from evaporating, works pretty good. Shawn

I used it too, and it works just as good as you see in the pics. If I were rich I'd buy a few hundred gallons of it and dip my whole car in. I have no idea how it works, you can get it all over your hands and it doesn't do a thing, but it destroys rust a million times better than crap like Naval Jelly.

Where or how can you get it?

What consistancy is it? Watery, or jellyish? Suppose it would creep down into rusted machinery, like a bolt, or a frozen engine maybe? If you're dipping stuff into it, can it be reused?

That stuff seems to work pretty good!
I read the claims on the web site and its supposed to be real safe and non toxic. How do they pull this off I wonder?

Its probably just molasses and water packaged all fancy and sold for $21 a gallon........... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seriously, it looks cool. I would try it someday.

Got a bucket of the stuff under the utility sink right now -- and it is COOL. Magic, maybe. Doesn't harm good iron or steel, just removes rust.

It's a thickish liquid -- maybe like real thin oil. Light surface rust will be gone in as little as 20 minutes; if a part has heavy rust you can just leave it in for a couple of days.

I had some Stromberg 97 bases with frozen throttle shafts -- they're absolutely bare metal now, but the stuff wouldn't penetrate and free the shafts after a week or so. Maybe if you left 'em in for a long time, I don't know. I've used it on other small parts and it's great stuff.

It starts clear, then turns dark as you use it. It supposedly works at the same rate until its completely saturated with former rust, then it just stops. You can then dump it down the drain. One guy said he pours it over his rose bushes, because they like the iron content.

It doesn't make fumes or stink, and it's safe for skin contact. But DON'T get it in a cut or scrape -- it stings like a mutha!

That process has been around in one form or another for decades. There was a product called PF-47 that was sold thru Hemmings and elsewhere in the 70's. It came in granular form and you added a very small amount to your own water. Worked great and reusable until it turned almost black. Even then you could strain off a lot of iron oxide contaminants and reuse by adding a very small amount of fresh product.

I suspect that EvapoRust is pretty much the same except it is premixed and you are paying $21 a gallon for the water.

PF-47 sold for $15 a gallon and it lasted me for about 20 years. Wish I could find it again.

here's the link again http://www.orisonmarketing.com/corrosion/evaporust/evapo-rust.html

you can use it over and over again up to a point, depending on how badly your rusted stuff is. I've de-rusted several Carter W-1 1bbl carbs and a few miscellaneous parts with the same gallon. It works better when it's warmer, but it's non-toxic and pretty much odor-free, so I use it inside... but I live by myself so who am I gonna annoy?
