kustumizer
01-20-2004, 04:34 PM
Went to my friends shop monday, i traded him some tin a while back. He said he was going to make a yard decoration out of the tin and some spare parts he had. When i arrived to his shop this is what i saw! This guy has about 15 rods and sleds and he considers this a yard decoration! Thought everybody might like to see this. Hope it doesnt get deleted. Is it, like, full of snow? The windows look all white.

haring
01-20-2004, 05:18 PM
Wait, explain this better. Is that made from REAL parts, you know, all the parts WE'RE all trying to piece together to make cars? How far is this thing from being a finished, driveable car?! It looks so right.

Yard art???!!! What a waste!

HotRodJosh
01-20-2004, 05:34 PM
I agree, what a waste. Why not just finish it? I know that old iron is easy to find in some places but you don't have to let it just sit out in the snow and rot.

kustumizer
01-20-2004, 05:36 PM
The windows are white because there is sheetmetal behind it. This is not a waste! the parts on the car are pretty far gone the chassis is crap the tires are crap, so it is not a waste at all. The guy already has a crap load of rods and is around 60 years old and doesnt want to mess around with too far gone tin!! nate

MrGasser
01-20-2004, 05:39 PM
If he thinks that's "too far gone",...I'll give him scap price for it!

kustumizer
01-20-2004, 05:45 PM
You cant tell by the pics, yeah it can probably be saved, but if you had the tin and didnt havbe to work and had all the money and the world an access to the tin you wanted, and is one of the best known rod builders in the mass area, you would do this too. Who cares what he did with it, i thought you guys would like it to look at, it doesnt run theres no tranny no supsension the axles are welded to the frame, the doors are welded together the motor is a peice of crap that he got out of some car in his little junk yard he has. I thought you guys would like to look at it and not say its a waste and that crap. What if i told you in front of his house he had a 31 buick sedan that is his other yard deco, would you bust balls then???? Im not joking about that either. Nate

So this guy has loads of cash to buy perfect tin while he lets his stash of "junk" sit outside and rot... the very tin that some people would kill to find and build. You have not been around long enough to realize this but some guys on this board have built some of the most bitchin cars you will ever see out of crap that makes this thing look Concours quality.

I want to see some of this guy's real cars, because his thrown together junk looks damn near PERFECT. THAT is why people are getting bent out of shape about his "yard art".

Satinblack
01-20-2004, 06:30 PM
Yep, I agree. Its his stuff and its cool that he has enough stuff to do that with. Its the guys that arent using there stuff and letting it sit around to rot that bother me. Its no different then making a couch out of the rear of a 59 caddy or whatever else. Satin

kustumizer
01-20-2004, 06:32 PM
OK ill show you some of his rides. Its his stuff i traded the tin he made it out of for a motor and his didnt want to build a chevy and mess with paper thin metal, so he made something kool out of it instead of letting it rot and not letting anybody see it, so thats why he made it!!! here are some pics of cars HE HAS MADE. not some local rod shop made these for him, he does everything!!! nate

I think that car is cool. I plan to do a similar thing with a paper thin T roadster body I have. I need an "art car" for the upstairs in my shop. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Nate, relax dude. Your buddy is obviously a RULER. You have to see the irony of the yard art aspect vs what 3/4 of the HAMB would just be itchin' to build. But your sig says you're 17, so maybe not. Maybe you're "growing up" around this guy and don't know how hard it is to find some of this stuff in other parts of the country. I have a friend cut his teeth hanging out with the Indy Road Rockets. Last summer they all came up here to hang out with us and he was amazed that all the cruise night stuff was muscle cars, cause he didn't know any different. A bit of advice. Learn all you can from your friend and don't take his knowledge for granted, cause he obviously knows his shit.

You HAMB guys from Flint, Mi. should know Jon Olay, the guy who does louvers and builds some bitchin rods. He made a similar yard art out of some old rusted Model A truck parts that someone gave him. He combined the rusty cab with some junk he had laying around and came up with a chopped and channeled PU much like the one at the start of this thread. When it was done he parked it besidehis driveway and he said his wife had about 5 offers to buy it the first day it was sitting out.

Yo, Nate, calm down. Don't be such a spaz.

We LIKE the car. Most of us are starting with sheetmetal that looks a lot worse than the one you showed, so I guess the point is that some of us can imagine that car as closer to finished than perhaps you can see.

Oh, and don't fall for that Michael Jackson stuff from your friend -- just because he has a nice shop and nice cars does NOT mean that you have to sleep in the same bed.

Peace.

My essex is a hell of a lot worse than that "yard art" I think it is a waste and I'm young and even I can see that, speaking of a waste talk about what he did to that healy!!!
Someone who does that to perfectly good tin should have it taken away from them regardless of who they are, how old they are, and how many other cars they have. I looked for years for a car that I could get cheap enough to afford, if your friend wants to waste a car like that he should give it to some one who would be thrilled to have it not let it rust into the ground so that one less person can have the car of their dreams!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

quickrod
01-20-2004, 10:12 PM
i think the point that nate may be missing, and maybe should be clarified is we consider this a group of people who not only bust each others balls, but are willing to help outa fellow builder/enthusiast who may be having trouble finding what is becoming non existent tin.therefore, regardless of its "paper thin" condition, some may feel that maybe your freind should first consider the fact that a fellow car enthusiast would appreciate the chance to make his first rod out of some hard to find tin, before he wastes it on yard art because he does'nt want to deal with all the aggrevation and hard work that he's probably done a million times on other cars.maybe suggest to your"really good freind" that you know some people willing to step up to the challenge, instead of letting it rot away to nothing at all....somthing to consider brother.....no sarcasm intended...quickrod http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

It had so much bondo and bullshit when I looked close that I stopped being pissed and appreciated that the guy just wanted something that looked cool in his yard. Sounds kinda like what this guy did, though I would still like to have it.

Exactally what it sounds like! I'm not looking at a very saveable car and say "Hey guys isn't it cool that some people have so many cars, they can just piss on the ones they don't care about. You should see the other car that he just lets rot out front too its a '31 buick or what ever the hell it is!!!" You obviously haven't grown up in an area or been to places where cars like that are hard to find and people would kill for what you consider "junk" because you too young to know better. And that what I mean by "Im young and I can even see that"...you fucker

Hey man sometimes you just have to take things with a grain of salt. The guys on here are just palying withyou cause you are getting very deffensive about nothing. Just paly along and have some fun. Give some shit back and dont get worked up and call people faggots. Just think of a better comeback than they did without letting it get to you. This is a place where you have to have some thick skin. Just some advice man. We were all your age once and can relate someway. Have fun
By the way I dig the yard art. Sometimes It is better to "store" your parts that arent being used so that everyone can see and enjoy them. and if you ever need them you wont froget were you put em.

Cool Yard art...

And he IS saving it from the crusher so don't worry, it will b around when he's gone and some young punk can make a runner out of it then!

All ive got is a Skylark wire wheel holding up the garden hose and a 7 foot tall bird of paradise sculpture wife made out of what was left of my 1940 GMC truck bed in the front yard.
I'm thinking about using some old stovebolt heads for flower bed borders...I guess that will PO some angst ridden young lowriders some... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

i agree you cant tell anything from a picture, this thing

could be made out of plywood and bondo, and everyone is

stressing on what a waste , if its decent steel it could

have a ton of paint on it to protect it....... ,it wont

melt with the snow, if its plywood and bondo, you aint

drivin it anyway, its still that guys car ,he can crush it

if he wants, i think if its buildable however the best use

would be to give it to his young friend nate and help him make it a real car

This piece of yard art is damn fine. What I like even better is the fact that it's REAL yard art, considering that probably 80 percent of all rods are yard art.

The guy ought to put a couple old lawn chairs out behind it to make it a better statement.

seems to me that this is the same situation that some of us get into, when some ol' bastard tells us we're fuckin' up a good car. we get all pissed off and talk shit sayin' how it's mine and i'll do with it what i want to !! i don't see much difference here. it's his and he did what he wanted to with it.

i think it's hella cool. i'd rather see it like this, than sitting on ebay, or going over to japan or hidden off in some garage where you hear about it but it's not for sale and it rots away there.
ya know, some kid may be in his pops car, and they cruise by there, and at that moment he decides....that's what i want, not a civic!!!
ok, i'm through preaching, i dig it. i'd rather see it on the road, but i wouldn't mind driving past it in his yard either. what a great sculpture.

Nate,
I think the yard art is cool, and more power to the guy that he can enjoy his cars and car stuff as much as he does. Hope to shit I can still do that at his age!

That shop view reminds me of a friend who lives in the Philippines. Ex USAF, he retired there 20 years ago and has a huge, dusty old shop just full of cars, motors, trannies, panels, tools, trim, all sorts. Has motors rotting out in the rain, a roadster he built from a De Soto 20 years ago, done 5000 miles, sat for 18 years under cover. A rail he built 25 years ago, big block Chev, a drag racing Jeep that did 10's, three hemis on stands, etc etc. Hell of a place to just wander aound and take in the smell of racing. Also has hundreds of pics of old drag racing in the rice paddies and on unfinished highways.

Any you ex military guys ever serve at Clark Air Force Base, in Angeles City, in the Philippines. Remember a plane mechanic called John Risya??
