anyone ship a car internationally?

I have an auction going now - and someone is asking about shipping the car to the netherlands - anyone have experience with shipping/containers internationally? - recommendations or ideas? thanks...

Hey beatnik, when I was living in Austin I sold a car to a guy in Germany... found a shipper that flat-bedded the car from my house to Jacksonville FL, and from there it went on a container ship to Bremerhaven, Germany. The guy picked it up there, and was very pleased. From my recollection it took about 3 weeks total and I think it was only $900 or something. Can't remember the name of the company, but I'll check my records. In the meantime check "international freight forwarders" in the Yellow Book.

I remember a couple of complications, though -- I remember that there was some BS to deal with on international bank routing for the payment (I think it was something like $50 or $100 to transfer funds); it might be a lot easier if he can pay via PayPal. Also, I think there are HazMat rules for shipping, like the gas tank needs to be drained. A freight forwarder should know all the pertinant rules.

Do it for a living but down here in N.Z. Mike seems to have it pretty much covered, if the vehicle is a runner you can probably get it on a roll on roll off vessel rather then containerised, and like he says check out freight forwarders in the yellow pages, my agents over there are Damco Maritime.

Yeah I did a couple years ago. I sent a '57 Ford Zodiac back to whence it came. I just trailered it up to the docks in Jacksonville, Fla. I think it was around $650 to Rainland, open. I sold a '61 Caddy to a smelly Swiss trucker back in '89. I don't know how much that cost, all's I know is that I did all the translation. I hope that helps.
