View Full Version : A simple little detail
A neat little finisher for a highboy Deuce chassis Vern Tardel is building for a customer. Took a couple hours to do, including design, cutting, and polishing. Fun stuff.

Thought it was a doubler plate, help the frame from stress?.....OLDBEET
That's just plain NEAT!
Just needs some drilled and safety wired acorn nuts to finish off the look.
Great touch, DrJ! I'll pass that along to Vern tommorow.
The plate, made of aluminum, is an outside finisher for the steering box mount in a Deuce frame. Actually, the box is an F-1 box with a Tardel adapter. While the plate is mostly decorative, it also helps distribute the load over a larger area of the frame . . . yeah, right. It is after all aluminum, but it looks cool and that's reason enough for doing it.

On a lite weight car that might not be a problem. But its kinda a weak spot on F-1s. Have seen many stress cracks around that mounting. Visible movement while sitting still going lock to lock. I'm thinking that car has some kind of extra plate inside the frame............OLDBEET

Thats the kind of small detail I look for when I see a car for the first time. When you see something like this it makes me take a closer look to see if there isn't something else that makes the car stand out.

Cool looking Mike, I checked the other board and saw the status of the Bonneville car. Maybe you should bring that over here. Just a thought. Also, do you know if Vern still has some "FLATHEADS FOREVER" shirts still? I need to get a couple more and I saw that they did not have them this past year.

Chris -- I think Vern has FF shirts in stock most times. FAX him at 707-838-6065.
Very nice. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Bet it starts a little fad.
Not only on a steering box, but other places.

Is the guy a Philadelphia flyer fan? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif sorry I couldn't resist.
It's always the little details that make the difference.

I've done similar things when I screwed up and wanted to hide my mistake.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
No mistakes under this piece, although it would make a great coverup for flame-cut hole.

I would assume he's fitted some compression tubes into the frame, rather than just hunker the nuts down onto hollow box?
Looks neat though, and it will be stored away in my little 'idea ' area http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yup... I may "borow" that idea, too. Like C9 says, it'll start a trend. But only 'cuz it's cool.
