View Full Version : Tech post: Ghetto wheel painting
This was from an old Krylon ad from the 70's.
When painting wheels that have tires on them, jst rub household soap on the tire, spray your wheel, then wash the soap off. Your wheel will be painted and your tire wont.
Done it a couple of time with great success.

sounds more "redneck" than "ghetto" to me.ghetto is putting $1500 of wheels and tires on a $500 car http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'm painting a set of wheels as we speak. But my solution is to let the air out of the tire and break the bead a little. then cut a piece of cardboard out big enoughto cover the rim. Then cut a hole in the center with a slit, tuck the cardboard under the rim and slightly over lap the edges. Wha La.

Jack the car up and spin the wheels...use the engine to do the drive wheels...
...then you can dip a big paint brush in some paint and touch it to the rims...
...and your neighbor on the next block will wonder how he got a painted stripe down the back of his house and where that paint brush came from!!!

ive used petroleum jelly before. just have to make sure ya tape off the wheel. if it gets on the wheel that paint will just wipe off. not to mention the natural armor all effect when ya wipe it off. sweet huh now thats redneck straight out of arkansas.

Ditto on the ahem... Vaseline. But whatever you do, make sure you have NO ARMOR ALL or anything that contains silicone when you paint the wheels, or anywhere near a car you wanna paint, and that includes dashes, seats, etc... otherwise it's FISHEYE city!!!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What bones35 said, It's worked for me too. Grease, Vaseline, anything the paint won't stick to.
I just buy these.
No taping, no vaseline, no paint.
Ok ... so I am a clown.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Scrub

A simple way to mask wheels and be reusable is to use aluminum flashing. I saw some at a hardware store and got the idea. The flashing is something like 6 to 9 inches wide and something like 20 to 50 feet long. Just eyeball it as you wrap it around your rim with enough slack to make em adjustable. Mark the length you measured, cut it with scissors, and then drill two holes and bolt em together with small bolts and wingnuts. If ya make it big enough, you can drill other holes to wrap around 14-15-16in or whatever other sizes you may need. Then before painting, just slide the ring between your tire bead and rim (some fiddling around wheel weights though). Works great
What scrub said.
Or use a strip of pasteboard rolled up.
Needs to be tall enough to catch the overspray but low enough to let you get the gun in to work.
