I've been making my own whitewalls for years. I've done about five sets with good results. I have a set on a car I drove everyday for three years. They still look as good today as the day I did them. Just about every tire has a factory line close to the tread, I use this for my whitewall edge. I grind the sidewall smooth with a DA sander and 80 grit paper. You don't have to grind a lot off, just get rid of the detail in the sidewall. Clean your tire real good with a wax and grease remover so the tape will stick. New tires work best, but I've done used one with the same results, just make sure you clean them real good to remove any tire dressings like Armor All. Tape up the side wall were you want the outer edge of your whitewall. Cover the rest of the tire with newspaper, leaving the area to spray uncovered. You don't have to dismount your tires if they are on rims. I just let the air out, and break loose the bead. Tape up the rim if the tire is mounted. I use KRYLON Fusion for plastic in a spray can, #2320 Gloss White. One can should do four tires, but buy two just in case, you don't want to run out. Spray a light coat and let it set up, then spray until you have the desired coverage. Don't make it any thicker than you need to. Let it set up, then remove the tape. WOW Whitewalls!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif Here's the tire I started with, it's a used one. I can do four tires in about four hours. Dean

The whitewalls last a long time. When I was in Calif. they would last years, now that I'm in Missouri the weather sucks, so I might need to refresh them a little sooner. White shoe polish works for cleaning them up. Of course if you hit a curb, or run on a flat, your screwed. Really not good for them. Dean

Very cool... my friend did the same on his Ranchero a while ago. Looked really good. I made the mistake of trying it with that Vinal spraypaint, because I thought normal paint would come off. Not the case... bad idea! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Excellent, valuable post, just a little late for me; I ordered big-and-little wide whites for my F-1 from Diamond Back last week! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Oh, well, with all the endorsements I've heard and read from Diamond Back customers I'm probably okay, but I am going to try your method. Thanks for sharing.

Cool idea funny thing I think the smooth black wall is cool as well.I live in a colder climate and think that the change in temp might play a big part in it cracking.I think the key is not to apply too much paint.Got to love the poor man stuff.

Krylon Fusion also works GREAT for plastic dashboards and interior panels. It adheres well and holds up to the sun.

my question about the fusion paint is how well it works when you refresh it with more paint? do you have to sand the old paint off and do it again? i can't remember what it was i did in the past, but something i used when i was a little kid worked good and dried well with one coat, and the second coat made it gooey and really undriable. i was gonna shell out some scratch for factory whites, i think i'll be reconsidering that one, and shaving a couple of hundred bucks off of my build cost!:)

QUESTION: F.A> Whitewall or Anyone...I want to paint my 52 chevy wheels blue (chevy blue, like that which is found on the stovebolt valve cover), Is this Fuision product appropriate to spray on the wheel? What primer is good OR is it not required?
My goal on my project is to go low-buget while still maintaining a "quality look" which does not sky-rocket my debt....Thanx for Info....

Cool post, I never even thought about using that method to smooth a black wall. I hate the raised lettering on my front runners.
I also had never heard of that product, If it comes in black I'd like to use it to cover up the raised white lettering on the inside of my rear tires.

I just made my tires into whitewalls today using this method. It works great. Just two coats of paint and voila whitewalls. Now I have 4" whitewalls. Very cool tech post you are the man. Thanks. With the wife not working and raising my son I don't have any money left over for tires, but now I'm rollin in style. I tried the portawalls, they are crap. But, even I won't paint my tires. I would rather run Bias.
And wh not just have them CUT.
Fat ASS Whitewalls
01-22-2004, 01:38 AM
Just a quick note. Mac55 PMed me and said his whitewalls cracked when he had them mounted. He had them mounted by a tire machine, I do my own tires by hand. The tire machine stretches the shit out of them. If you are going to have them mounted at a tire store, try mounting them before you spray the sidewall. Then just let the air out, spray them, and air them back up. Dean

[/ QUOTE ] You can only cut tires with white rubber already in them, such as the small whitewalls, or raised white letters. Then you are restricted to about 2" of white rubber. If you cut blackwalls you still have to paint them to get the whitewall. Plus it costs money. This costs the price of a can of paint, some sand paper, and some time. You can do Bias ply tires too. Hey Beatnik... I have a set of M/T ET streets on my car, and I didn't want those big 'ole white leters hangin out, so I just fogged a couple of light coats of KRYLON Semi Flat Black over 'em and you can't tell they were ever white! Maybe I'm on crack, but I don't know what you mean? Wax and grease remover won't hurt the rubber. Here's an update on my tires. I drove my truck all winter long, through snow, salt, and rain. The front whitewalls have some small scuffs in them, nothing bad. The rears have the age cracks from the used tires, but still look good. They even survived the high pressure car wash. I'll probably respray them pretty soon. If I was still in Calif. with the great weather, I wouldn't have to do anything to them. Dean

I purchased 4 225-70-15s from Coker, turns out that one of them was 215-70-15, I tried to have a new one swapped out, but it was gonna cost almost as much as a new one to send back. I will never deal with Coker again. All they want is your money. I'm a very dissatisfied customer. Just wanted to let everyone know before they bought from Coker.

You really need to poke around here a bit more before resurrecting an ancient thread that has nothing to do with Coker and then badmouth them. Not only are there representatives from Coker on this board, but they go out of their way to help resolve issues for us HAMBers. Plus, they are Alliance vendors...if you have a beef with them, why not contact them and try to make it right?

. Wow, I was wondering about the fusion paint... I used flat white krylon and was happy with my results. The question is, unless you have huge chunks of paint falling off, how close do you really have to look???
And if you have to look that close, just look into your wallet a little deeper, and watch your money go bye-bye.....I'm happy with my $10 spray on wide white michelins....

Yes, I tried this recently on my shop truck but I decided to use the Krylon Fusion "Bone White" satin finish to try a more antique look as I felt the bright white would be too intense for my personal taste.

Krylon Fusion eh? Too bad I didnt know that when I tried it. Im one of those giant retards who also tried spray painting white walls on my tires. However Im a giant retard because I used the wrong paint. Ive made pinner whites into black walls before with rustoleum satin black, and it worked killer for many years, but the whitee rubber must be just the right composition for paint. So when I used rustoleum satin white on my tires it looked awesome! Then i drove it to a show, next day. I checked when I got there and it was flaking off. (My wife teases me to this day about getting fake white wall in my eye, lol) lucky for me with it all flaking off and enough staying nice in the right spots, it just looked like i had some really jacked up dirty ol white walls (from a few feet away) up close they looked like crap. Thats ok though cause every body was looking at the coffin hanging out of my hearse and not the tires anyway, lol. These days I just get out the trusty ol grinder. Perhaos I'll use the "fusion" on the ground whites for a tune up! Cool idea! -GothY-
