I'm doing 50 Pontiac Tailights on my coupe. Teardrops are cool, and so are the Sargent Stripes too. My roadster has 41-48 Chevys. I like the 59 caddy's too.

Wait, are we talking in general, or on Model A's?

Cause I dig falcon taillights, and mid fifties caddy's too.

I read an article in one of the mags back in the 60s talking about the "proper" location for a tail light on the back of a '32 Ford. Other than where Henry, (or was it Edsel by then?) put it on the fender.
The article suggested lining it up directly above the verticle part of that indentation on the gas tank, that way allowing the eye to flow from one part to the other.
This fairly evenly spaced the lights and license plate across the back panel, although placing the lights a might close together---check if local laws prevail...
It also suggested that to continue that flow of line that the twin tail pipes should be located directly below that crease in the gas tank.
The alternate pipe location being directly below the flat part of the frame horn covers.

Of course the Stude light I suggested would have to be worked in on top of the 1/4 panel where it meets the edge of the trunk lid...pretty drastic cutting on valuable old tin but that's what we do, isn't it?

I like the 48 Buicks. Very different and they don't repop them so they won't become like elbows. I had just put together a nice set of 50 Pontiacs (even the rare glass blue dot lenses) and Drake repoped them.

Gee, I missed this thread the first time around.

'41 Studebaker is the coolest and most graceful taillight for teardrop cars like '40 Fords. Valley Custom used them on so many cars, they single-handedly made the Stude lights extinct!

'51 Pontiac (with the sharper-edged bezel) is a perfect, pure design. Placed correctly, they look nice on nearly anything.

'54 Merc looked great on the Merc. I've never cared for them on anything else.

and, of course,

'41 Hudson are perfect for '36 Fords!

Those look like '63 Biscayne/Belair.
The Impala version has another chrome band around the light.
They are repopped but probably the most expensive Chevy tail light repopped.
I've got some but they're pitted and cracked :(
But I like them almost as much as the Lincoln/Mercury light NorwegianV8 posted.
The Stude lights 50Fraud mentioned are cool, but I wonder if the big shops actually scavanged them off wrecks or just bought them across the counter new. After all, they were still new(er) car parts at the time.
Those Mercury Park Lane lights would be bizzar/cool and the "pod" Imperial tail lights (and headlights) around the end of the 50's thru the early 60's would be good too

Don't forget the unobtanium '58 Edsel stationwagon tail lights!

Here's a real '41 Stude taillight, used by Valley Custom on the Ralph Jilek '40 Ford and a dozen other customs. Virtually impossible to find now.

The ones in your picture may be the repops made by Dick Falk in the SF Bay area; he sells them as rough bronze castings, or filed to shape, or finished and plated at various (high) prices.

in a rod and custom issue, a car had these 'studebaker-styled' taillights. anyone know what years these came out and what the actual units looked like?

Cool! I was unaware of those. At $95/pr (bezels only) they're a lot cheaper than Falk's.

Can't belive that nobody have posted these yet, one of my favorites...

Yep! I've always liked the style of the 58 Chevys.

I like the 48 Buicks. Very different and they don't repop them so they won't become like elbows. I had just put together a nice set of 50 Pontiacs (even the rare glass blue dot lenses) and Drake repoped them.

I love anything Buick, I think 52's are great on hot rods.
