Some roadsters are roadster pick-ups, some are just 'regular' roadsters with trunks or rumble seats. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

An abortion. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
(i've had 2 of em so no, i'm not slaming em.I really like them.esp '60s)
maybe even a cowboy cadilac???
Rat..
My '69 El Camino was titled as a car. Ford had a unibody pickup in the 60's which had solid sheetmetal from head to tail lights.

Ya Mutt and it was a 1/2 ton PU. Not a Ranchero, it was an F100 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In Australia,an el Camino would be considered a "coupe utility" or "ute"

My '82 Rampage was designated a truck and required the more expensive "commercial" license plates... When I traded it in on an '83, they'd changed the law and it was now considered a passenger car! El-Caminos and Rancheros were included in the name change as were mini vans..Go figure...

I think that if it has an open cargo area seperate from the seating area it could be classed a pickup. Weather it ever hauls or is capable of hauling is a different story.
Now lets take it a bit farther, an SUV with the top removed would not be classed a pickup. Nor would a wagon with the roof cut off. Unless there is something (ie bady part) that seperates the seating area from the cargo area.
I think originally the El Camino or Ranchero was considered a utility vehicle not unlike say a '55 business coupe. Other than the fact that your stuff got wet if it rained. Later people started calling them a pickup.
Of course I could be totaly wrong about the ranchero/el camino thing. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
