View Full Version : I am exhausted...

I'm tired of the drama. I want a break from it in the worst way... I've always thought that people can moderate themsevles, but I'm not sure I believe that anymore. I'm gonna make myself some enemies in the next few weeks I think.

I realize there is a social aspect to the HAMB and I appreciate most of it, but I can't baby sit those that are destructive. What may be funny and entertaining to some of you makes the HAMB less fun for me and that's not cool.

If things continue along this path, I'm going to start doing some things that upset a lot of you. I'm just tired of dealing with it...

The second edition of Tech week starts monday.

Your house, your party...your rules!

I think we can all respect that...and another Tech Week will be a good way to draw the focus back onto planning, designing, building and enjoying hot rods and customs. It was GREAT last time around, and should be equally refreshing this time as well!

Yes, we tend to stray from the topic from time to time, and I apologize for any undue foolery I may have participated in...I try to avoid those situations for the most part, but human nature is a tough burden to live with sometimes!

I hope I haven't been one of the thorns in your side...talk of V6 powered Chevys and such! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

And...to add possible fuel to the fire...I think it is absoloutely ESSENTIAL to have rules and guidelines in effect. Yes, people SHOULD be able to regulate themselves with little supervision and act responsibly...but if there are no clear cut boundaries, things will inevitably go astray...sooner or later.

You gotta do what YOU think is right to maintain this place to YOUR satisfaction, and that may lead to some hurt feelings and unrest amongst some...as you stated...but as a WHOLE, I think the HAMB will be a better place for it.

I know it's been suggested before, and it may or may not be worth looking into...but perhaps a dedicated "off topic lounge" may be workable? Sort of like the Classifieds, Tech-O-Matic, and the Questions and Suggestions forums on the Main Index? It's something that I've seen at a few other message forums, and it helps to keep the main board on-topic by providing a place for members to get other topics out of their system amongst like-minded folks they see as friends? I dunno...just a possibility???

(To that end, I think we can take advantage of the internal messaging system, or "PMs" as we call them, to shoot greetings, jabs and what-not at each other. It'd help keep such goofiness off of the topic page at least. (Even though I'm just NATURALLY goofy at times!))

In closing, Thank You once again for creating and moderating this place. It's been like Therapy for me over the past year, and I've made many new and wonderfull friendships and aquaintences as a direct result of my being here...of us ALL being here.

I will try my best to do MY part to keep things as you'd like them, while still keeping in touch with HAMB friends! I think we ALL owe you at least THAT much in return for the unique opprutinity you've given us to get to know and help each other!

Carry on, we're behind you on this...whatever you decide.

And as far as tech week goes, I recall the last time it being the BEST HAMB reading ever. It should also set an example of how things should be around here without Ryan having to insist apon it.

I'm sure everyone here is guily of an off topic post or two, and we need to be aware of how too much of that could drasticly affect this place.

I can relate having been a chair person for a commitee that puts on a major event once a year and trying to direct 10 sub commitees. That was a major job!! Trying to direct 4000 to ones ideals is imposible no matter what!!! There will always be ones that impose self will even if its only in the forms of slips. This sounds like a begining to a end ??? I hope not and agree that surendering is better than going down with the ship. All things must change with growth finding the right path is the question

Ryan, I can only imagine how hard it is to keep a quickly growing website/chat forum focussed on yer original and/or present plan. I've been telling a co-worker a lot about the site, today I was explaining how much the members pitch in, money-wise, to help keep it going with auctions and offering a share of sales from parts or cars to the moderator. He was pretty astonished that that happens voluntarily on a website.
I can totally understand your frustration, and just wanted to highlight some positives even seen by some outsiders, fer what it's worth.
Thanks for providing such a useful site!

Everybody has their own definition of what "off topic" means......the only person whos opinion really means anything is Ryans.

Ryan....why not just start deleting the posts you feel inappropriate ??.....People would get the idea real quick of what is OK for the board and what isn't. Since you have never actually set down some more specific guidelines, it's difficult for a group to decide whats cool with you and whats not.

I also vote for something that regularly helps you with the funding....and what's the matter with profit????

ray
01-17-2004, 11:45 AM
drama, huh?

I've met some great people on the hamb, and i've seen some real assholes here too. but the only thing approaching drama i've seen recently is a little ribbing of a "businessman" on here, who DESERVES a little shit. musta got his panties in a bunch.

see, if i think a post of mine is gonna bother someone, and i don't want to deal with the repercussions...i don't post. WOW, what a simple concept, maybe if i don't air all of my dirty laundry on the internet, i won't get shit for it! i guess it must work, cause i cannot recall anybody bitching TO ME about anything i've posted, other than ryan deleting a few.

if the hamb is gonna be the kind of place where people who care about the hobby can't even poke fun at a grown mans (lack of) skills as a body/businessman, when he posts them for all to see...well, then i won't let the door hit me in the ass on the way out. no need to kick me out. i ain't gonna post if i feel i can't even tell a little joke.

sorry ryan, we all can't be your best friend, and post only what fits into a narrow range of whats acceptable and what you agree with. i want to know a little about the people on the other end, and that comes thru off topic posts, etc. really, is it THAT bad? ryan, you CAN ingore the whiners, y'know, they don't run the board, YOU do. do you have a problem with the posts being made, do you have a problem with the people posting, or do you have a problem with the people who cry to you?

take a break ryan. it'll pass.

fuck the drama...roll a bomba! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Big A
01-17-2004, 12:31 PM
I've been thinking quite a bit about PERSPECTIVE lately. There are a lot of guys here (and everywhere) that are all-too-ready to fling shit at a guy who doesn't happen to look at the world through the same eyes. People hafta understand that we all have different points-of-view on this hobby (or business or passion or whatever). Maybe if we all realize this fact, then maybe we won't be so quick to beat the shit out of some newby who doesn't know his blinker oil from his muffler bearings.

The HAMB has always been a party in a garage to me. There are guys here to work, to play, to tell jokes and bench-race, to learn... and there will always be class clowns, shit-disturbers and drama queens. I would hope that this will always be a party in a garage. I've got no skills, no money, no time and not much to offer, and my car is in storage indefinitely. I come here to learn, but also to be entertained. This is a relaxing break from the shit I put up with the rest of the day while trying to avoid bankruptcy.

Ryan, I hear you, I respect you, and I suppoert your decisions one way or another. You've created a historical landmark and a huge burden, a club with 4000+ members, the worlds largest bullshit session and the best place to hang-out with like-minded car freaks. In doing so you've also created a massive migraine for yourself and as much as it has given you some street cred and a lot of new friends, it's been a massive sacrifice too. I can appreciate that.

Put us on lock-down. Censor our posts and post a giant rule book. Most of us won't have a problem with that and we'll all still be here a year or two or three from now, but even in the strictest military school or reformatory there are still shit-disturbers, class clowns, drama queens and people just too dumb to know any better.

I would pay $24.00/year ($2.00/month x 4000 members x 12 months = $96,000/year) for the priviledge of coming here to learn and relax and hang around. That might make some of this worth while for you. You built this fuckin monster, take some pay for it. Pay the tax man, take a vacation, give the rest to charity, buy your wife something frilly... whatever.

You've got my support brother. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'd definitely pay. While I used to and bitch alot and still do a little about this place, it's still a great resource for all things car. Hell, I just bought three things here last night. While you'll have crybabies whining about you making money you still should. There's a fine line between integrity and stupidity. Making money off of a good idea is fucking fine as long as you're not screwing people. The $24 a year, if that's the number, is no where near screwing people. I pay HUNDREDS every year in fees to Ebay. Make money AND boot the shit heads. If nobody made money on hot rodding there would be no hot rodding. Think about it.

Ryan
01-17-2004, 01:02 PM
It's not about money fellas. The board is free. I started the HAMB for guys that didn't have the means to learn anywhere else - I'm not gonna take the board away from them or money away from their projects. The bottom line of the HAMB isn't money - it's completed projects.

Now, that said... Ain't it funny how the guys that cause most of my grief are guys that have never given back to the board? Maybe it should be about money for them. They know who they are, I know who they are... The HAMB is free for folks that want to lurk, learn, and teach. It's not going to be free anymore to those who want to talk internet shit and develop internet alter-egos to make themselves feel better about their 'real' lives.

I've had my annual "I hate every last one of you mother fuckers" melt down. I'm all good and ready to start making some changes and maybe even bullying up a bit.

I honestly kinda like some of the off topic shit. I have found that most of our opinions on cars is the same. I try to post an opinion that seems racey but most guys just agree with it. I have never posted an off topic post but I do enjoy replying to a few.
Some of the "personalities" lay it on a bit thick but I dont take it that seriously.
Last week I posted about where to buy panels for my 32, gasser shots of a 32, and posted some shots of my friends "heavy custom". All my questions were answered in 10 minutes and my post was enjoyed by all.

I like this place. I kinda like the drama and personalities. But it's your place and you can do what you want.
