Well it's too cold to paint tonight(even the garage feels chilly);it's about 3 degrees below zero in Tecumseh and my dog doesn't even want to go out and relieve herself so I guess I'll run a few pics and hit the sack.
Painted a couple companion pieces to the air cleaner I posted last week;a Model A grille,a horn button, and an intake manifold. This guy is trying to make his A look like it's tattooed I think. He wants to bring it over for MORE striping on it.Why not?I could use an around the world vacation about now!
I'll try and post some older stuff also if I can find any pics small enough. So here goes:

Safari...that grill shell looks sweet, would make good wall art too.

And though I've got 10 minutes untill its "technically" Friday, here's a model or two:

First, a '29 modified I just finished:

This last one is something that is very special to me:
It is a vinyl cap that I painted for my grandfather as a birthday present in 1963.I grew up with my grandparents and left to join the Navy in 64.He passed away in 65 and when I got out of the Navy in 67 the house had been sold and all my belongings(books, models, clothes, etc.)had been either given or thrown away.
When my mother passed away in 1987 I was cleaning out her apartment and came upon this cap as well as a bunch of toys I had when I was little. The toys were cool but the cap meant even more to me and I'm happy it's back home again. The paint is a little cracked but overall it's in good shape.
Sorry for the run on but I wanted to give a little history of it.

Hey K&R,

If I remember correctly, within the last six months a picture of a finished Ala Kart Touring was included in a show coverage in Scale Auto Enthusiast magazine or Model Cars magazine. It looked very good. Barris really should have built one as a companion to the Ala Kart. They would have looked great together.

REBEL
01-16-2004, 01:54 PM
Have you ever been in a spot where you want to try something new to you, while amongst Pros? Maybe I have some skills with spraying paint, but I found my shelf in the midst of a room full of Pinheads in DETROIT. I had come with the intent to watch, ask questions and give the little hairy sticks a go. But as I watched all around, Guy’s n Gal’s are pulling lines, which all look so sweet. I knew from fumbling at home by myself, that if I where to pull my hands out of my pockets my neon greenness will glow across the room. I watched a kind, soft-spoken man pull Blue on blue 1/16 lines. One side then the other, perfect cemitree all the way down with out a pause, finished it with several vertical lines 1/16 apart, then with a couple more stokes it turns into a face.
And then another fellow say’s "hey are you ready to jump in" ... No not yet I reply, in self-defence. He understands I think, I hope, although I had mentioned to him earlier I was coming to the meet and I was going to lean on him for guidance. But after watching some more, listening to the experience talk about different tips and tricks. I wanted to what till I got home, to attempt this Artform again.
Yet another fellow walks up and asks, where are you from, why aren’t you painting? Oh I ‘m just here observing, this is new to me. He grabs a blank and say’s I’m starting another one; I’ll show you my way of doing things. Sure that can’t hurt. That’s what I’m here for, to learn, right. He starts with the basic’s explains tools, supplies, prep.and lay out, how to hold the brush depending on what type of lines your doing. Then he load’s the brush, let’s (makes) me feel the loaded brush on the pallet. Then he pull’s lines giving instructions all the while. It was a very good lesson and I was grateful he took the time to explain everything to me.
... But then this brush is held in front of me … HERE DO SOMETHING. “Dam” there is still people here, and they all have eyes. But this fellow had gave so much time to me, I felt I owed him some effort, and hell I’m in a foreign country, if I become the "Jam’s entertainment", I can hide in my home country the rest of my life Eh!
So I took the brush and he stepped back. I made some pitiful strokes and turned to see him walk away to leave me experiment on my own. So then some more over reduced strokes followed by some off angle strokes. People would pass behind me, stop look, but didn’t laugh (thanks) and some would offer more suggestions. All in all everyone was great, several approached me to help me over the day. I really had nothing to fear, this was a safe bunch to expose my non-abilities. The kicker was a door prize of a brush and a pinhead saying don’t leave without your panel. Through the day he had produce several panels and one he had made special with “REBEL” across the bottom. I have mentioned no names, you know who you are. I want to Thank the hosts and ALL attendants, you are a great group! Thanks for the clever gentle nudge, to get me pulling some paint. And Thank you to my panel donor, it will hang in this room http://rebel-air.net/_wsn/page15.html http://rebel-air.net/_wsn/page16.html (The colours will fit here well) REBEL / Ed Ryall ... I'll post these two pics but I have to also post this disclaimer for anyone that looks at them! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif...

these are literally my first two attempts at pinstriping and I didn't even practice lines before starting these designs, so they are far from perfect. I'm posting them mainly so that anyone out there thinking of striping at all may see them as an example of a complete beginner's work and then decide to take that first step of picking up the brush. There are so many talented stipers on this board and it's a little intimidating to put up anything less than amazing in their presence, but I'm hoping that someone might see my first attempt and offer me some pointers. I've been practicing just about every night and it does get easier.

If there's anyone in the Baltimore area on here that stripes and wants to come to my house for beer and a little striping practice i'd love to learn next to someone with a little experience.

The orange and red one is my favorite although my hubby put a catalog on top of it not realizing it wasn't dry and some of the paint pulled off when I picked the catalog up : (

For some reason,Women can pick up Striping quicker than Men.I don't know why.
What are you using for brushes?

There are a few Stripers around the MD area,
Skate Fink is the first to come to mind,I know there are others.

The other suggestions I can offer is try to include some longer lines,
S shapes, and tighter curves in you designs.I'm sure that will come with experience.

Oh,and Practice,Practice,Practice. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm using an xcaliber 00 and one-shot reduced with mineral sprits at the moment. I plan to buy a mack next to see what that feels like and get a finer xcaliber as well.

The hard turns are the part that are evading me the most at the moment. The brush wants to kick out on me. I can do gentle, sweeping curves it's the tight ones that are the hardest.

Hey Guys & Gurls,

What a great Friday Art Show! I love all this participation. Great art and photos, models and drawings.

Brush: I got the rope around my neck and I'm ready to kick the chair. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I love that montage with the RPU, '57 Ford and that 'striping. Killer!

I am posting these pics of a really neat Lincoln from the Pile Up. I checked this ride out twice this past summer and I wish I had taken better pics.

The reason for the pics is the awesome pinstriping. I don't know who striped it. I can't find a signature on it. I believe the car is from Crown Point,In.

The stripiing is thin and consistent. It's the design that rocks. The guy has a real nice flair. Nice balance. There's alot going on in the design too. Yet, it flows nice. That's half the battle to striping. Once you learn how to pull consitent lines, it's design, design and more design that makes ya moola. This striper has great ideas. I hope ya can enjoy.

Joel:Judging from the work I would venture that it was done by one of three people:Darin Allen,Tom Culbertson,or Greg Cooper. It is VERY nice work.I made them in that order because I actually think it is Darin's work.I haven't seen any of Tom's work recently but he does a lot in that vein.Coop is my last choice because he doesn't do too many shows.
Here's a couple of drawings I did several years ago.I was fooling with cartoons and decided to try some minimalist stuff. The 57 Nomad was my first attempt.I think it took me about a minute to draw it.The 56 Nomad took about the same time but I thought about it for quite awhile before starting it.The other one is a pencil sketch outlined with a wide marker and then polyurethaned(to give it a parchment look)without erasing any of the guide lines.Again very little time expended.

Lostparts, first off nice work. I met Matt last year at the HW nationals in Cincinatti. I picked up a couple customs from him. He does very nice work. Were you the one who drew up the design for his T-shirt? later plmczy

Molly.......I use a Canon Elan7 35mm. And I got lucky with that shot. A snow storm was moving in FAST! and took just a few frames before it opened up on us. I usually use fuji film. I like the color better. Those are just my opinions. Beside the film and camera are secondary........it's the eye behind the lens. Sometimes I get lucky.

Of course, I agree that the shooter is the ultimate in the end result of the image. You wouldn't happen to remember the exact type of fuji film you shot on? NPC perhaps?

This little vacuum vise was given to me for Christmas by my oldest son.He thought it would be great for displaying panels at a show or something.Actually it works great for holding odd shaped stuff to stripe.I attach it to my hood(or any smooth surface, put in the part and stripe away!Had to decorate it a bit(nothing gets out of my shop unstriped!)

Hey K&R,

If I remember correctly, within the last six months a picture of a finished Ala Kart Touring was included in a show coverage in Scale Auto Enthusiast magazine or Model Cars magazine. It looked very good. Barris really should have built one as a companion to the Ala Kart. They would have looked great together.

http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Funny you mentioned that...I almost left out the "h" in "Psychodelic"! No kidding! I had it all layed out, paint and brush in my hand and for some reason I gave it one more look! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif That was close. The glovebox's finish is a little oxidized so it would've been tricky to get the paint off without leaving a ghost or taking off lots of the red. whew.

Everyone knows there is 2 types of dictionaries!. One for regular folk and one for sign painters.
Hey Brian, the stuff inside the Tiki is neat I always like to doing goofy stuff like that, backs of dash boards, inside glove box lids etc. Our race car has stuff on it that would never be seen unless the car is totally disassembled!
